13'11" x 15'9" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Light Green Field, Gold Border | Brand New
Measuring 13'11" x 15'9", this Chobi Peshawar Ziegler is a true oversize piece, close to square in proportion and wide enough to hold a full seating group or a 12 seat dining table with the chairs pulled back. It is hand-knotted knot by knot in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, with a soft light green field, a broad gold border and small rust red points scattered through the drawing. The rug is brand new and has never been on a floor. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and it sits comfortably alongside our other oversize hand-knotted rugs in both scale and presence.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft vertical lines visible in the first photograph are fold marks and shadows from the rug being stored folded on a pallet. They are not wear, not fade and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design of large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and thin curling vines that travel corner to corner in the relaxed Ziegler manner, drawn loosely enough that the eye never settles on one point. The frame is a 3 part border: a wide main band of alternating palmettes and leafy sprays, flanked by two narrower guard stripes of small rosettes and reciprocal blossoms. The corners resolve cleanly, with the vine turning rather than breaking. Because the pattern repeats evenly, furniture can be placed anywhere on the rug without cutting the composition.
The Color: Soft Green, Gold and Rust
The field is a quiet sage green with a celadon cast, lightly striated where the hand-spun wool took the dye at slightly different rates, which gives the ground movement instead of a flat printed look. Motifs are worked in gold, camel and ivory, with muted blue-grey leaves and tiny brick rust dots at the flower centers that lift the whole palette. The border runs a warmer honey gold, shading toward cream near the guard stripes, and a thin green line finishes the outer edge so the frame reads as deliberate. It is a low contrast, sun-washed scheme that suits green area rugs buyers who want warmth without a red field.
Peshawar Weaving and Chobi Quality
Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is the center for Chobi weaving, and the word chobi points to the plant and wood based dyes that give these rugs their soft, already mellowed tone. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine spun, so the yarn varies slightly in thickness and the pile catches light unevenly, the same quality that makes an older Oriental rug look alive. The back, shown in the photographs, is even and tightly packed with straight rows and a clean selvedge, and the fringes are the warp ends of the cotton foundation, not sewn on. At this size, weaving a piece this consistent takes a wide loom and several weavers working in step for well over a year.
