Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries a true all over floral design, a lattice of curving vine stems that link large crowned palmettes down the center axis with smaller leaf forms, buds and 8 petal rosettes scattered between them. The drawing is deliberately open, with plenty of bare field showing between motifs, which is what keeps a pattern this busy from feeling heavy. Look at the close-up photograph and you can follow a single vine as it splits, throws off a serrated leaf, and curls back on itself. The main border is wide and ivory, filled with alternating rosettes and cloud band scrolls, and it is fenced on both sides by narrow guard stripes in pale sage and gold. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly rather than being cut off, which is a sign the weaver followed a well drawn cartoon.

The Gray Green and Cream Palette

The field color is the whole character of this piece. It sits between gray and green, with an almost silvery cast in raking light, and the hand-spun wool carries subtle horizontal striation across the ground so the color breathes rather than sitting flat. Against it, the vine work runs in warm cream, honey gold, wheat and soft tan, with occasional pale sage leaves that nearly disappear into the field. The border is a creamy ivory that reads as bone rather than white, its motifs outlined in dove gray and putty brown. The only sharp notes in the entire rug are small burgundy outlines, a scattered rosette center here, a hooked motif in the border there, and they are used so sparingly that they function as punctuation. Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan is where the Chobi Ziegler style is woven today, and it is some of the most consistent hand-knotted work being produced anywhere. The design lineage traces to the Ziegler and Sultanabad cartoons that Western importers commissioned in the late 1800s, redrawn at a softer scale with a muted palette, and the name Chobi refers to the plant and wood dye tradition the style is built on. The back photograph shows the weave clearly: an even, moderately fine knot count on a cotton foundation, tight straight rows, and a clean hand-finished selvage with the warps carried out into a short fringe. The wool is hand-spun and lustrous, which is why it takes light the way it does in the angled shots.
