9' x 12' Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ziegler All Over Design | Tan and Sage Green Natural Wool

A brand new Chobi Peshawar in the true room size that most homes are shopping for, this piece measures 9' x 12' and is knotted entirely by hand in natural wool on a cotton foundation. The pile is thick and springy, the wool carries a soft natural sheen, and the drawing is deliberately quiet: a tan field of open floral vines framed by a broad soft green border. Photos 6 and 14 show the reverse, where the knot rows sit straight and even across the full 9 foot width, and photo 14 also shows the original back tag reading 9 x 12. Because it has never been on a floor, the ends and sides are crisp and the pile has no shading or foot traffic. Design and Motifs

The field is a classic Ziegler layout, an all over design built from thin undulating vines that split the ground into soft ogival compartments. Inside each compartment sits a stepped rosette, a small 4 leaf blossom or a paired palmette, and between them run tiny rust diamonds and clipped leaf sprays, visible clearly in photos 11 and 12. There is no medallion and no strong center, which is exactly why this drawing works in a 9 by 12: furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting the pattern in half. The wide main border carries alternating gold sunflower rosettes and large ivory vase and leaf cartouches on the green ground, seen in close-up in photos 7, 8 and 13, with a narrow tan guard stripe of small cresting blossoms on each side. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border motif turning rather than being cropped, which is a sign of an attentive weaver rather than a rushed one.

A Tan Field Framed in Soft Green

The palette is the reason this rug sells itself in person. The ground is a warm sandy tan, slightly camel where the light catches the pile and closer to pale wheat where it falls away, with the natural abrash of hand-spun wool giving the field gentle horizontal movement instead of a flat printed look. The border is a dusty sage green, muted almost to a gray green in the shaded photos, which keeps the frame from ever reading as a hard line. Against those two neutrals the ornament is drawn in soft mustard gold, pale butter yellow, a light terracotta rust for the outlines and small diamonds, and a milky ivory in the vase motifs. Deeper brown tones appear only in the fine vine outlining and along the selvage. Nothing here is saturated, so the rug pairs with oak, walnut, white plaster walls and brass equally well, and it sits comfortably with other green rugs and neutral upholstery.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Chobi Peshawar rugs come from the weaving workshops around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where the Ziegler drawing of the late 19th century workshop revival has been kept alive and adapted to modern interiors. Chobi refers to the wood based and plant based dye work that gives these rugs their low, mellow color from the loom rather than from later washing. The wool is hand-spun, which is what produces the uneven yarn thickness and the subtle striations across this field, and the knotting is worked on a cotton warp at a weight suited to a large floor piece: heavy enough to lie dead flat, dense enough that the pile stands up rather than splaying.
