8'1" x 10' Chobi Peshawar Rug | Olive Green Ziegler All Over Design | New Natural Wool
This is a brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar piece, hand-knotted entirely by hand in natural wool on a cotton foundation and finished in the Zigler tradition that put Peshawar weaving on the map. At 8'1" x 10" of coverage it sits squarely in the most useful room size made, and the proportions here are honest: a deep olive brown field carrying an all over floral lattice, framed by a wide ivory border that lifts the whole piece off the floor. The wool is hand-spun and dyed with natural dyestuffs, which is why the field reads with a gentle abrash rather than a flat machine-even tone, and why the gold in the palmettes catches light differently from one end of the rug to the other. Every piece we sell, including this Oriental rug, ships with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and construction. If you are comparing across other 8x10 Oriental rugs, this one earns its place on color and on the quality of the drawing.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over design, built from a repeating lattice of large serrated palmettes, split leaf arabesques and small rosettes linked by hairline vines. Rows alternate: a broad gold palmette with a rosette center, then a pair of curling leaf forms cradling an upright blue bud, then a tier of ivory and blush flowerheads. The repeat is regular enough to feel ordered yet drawn loosely enough that no two units are identical, which is the mark of weavers working from a cartoon by hand rather than pixel by pixel. The main border is the showpiece: a wide ivory ground carrying eight-pointed olive and gold star rosettes, each with a quartered rosette center, connected by slim blue club-and-diamond links with small terracotta leaf sprays between them. Narrow guard stripes in rust and sky blue separate border from field, and an outer cresting wave band in gold runs the full perimeter before the solid brown selvage and natural wool fringe. There is no medallion and no central focus, so the rug can be turned, placed under a table or shifted to a new room without the pattern fighting the furniture.
A Natural Olive Green and Ivory Palette
The ground color is the reason to buy this piece. It is an olive green pulled deep toward walnut brown, a muted, slightly smoky tone that shifts between moss and chocolate as the light moves across the pile, with soft horizontal striations from the hand-spun yarn. Across it the ornament runs in warm antique gold and honey ochre, with ivory and pale blush highlights in the flowerheads and small accents of soft light blue, a dusty aqua, in the buds, leaves and rosette centers. Thin terracotta and brick outlines sharpen the drawing without ever reading as red. The border swings the other way completely, a creamy ivory to oatmeal ground that gives the eye somewhere to rest, with the olive and gold stars echoing the field colors so the two zones belong together. The outer edge and selvage return to the darkest brown, which frames everything and hides traffic. Overall this reads as an earth tone rug, warm and low contrast, and it sits comfortably with wood floors, leather, brass and the soft whites most rooms are painted; buyers working a sage and cream scheme should also look through our green Oriental rugs.
Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Zigler Tradition
Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is the center of the Chobi trade, and Chobi work is where the classic Zigler drawing of the 19th century commercial workshops has been kept alive by hand. Chobi means wood in Persian usage, a nod to the plant and wood-based dyes these weavers favor: madder, walnut husk, indigo and pomegranate rind, washed down to the soft, lightly faded tonality you see here. The wool is hand-spun highland fleece, long-stapled and lanolin-rich, which is why the pile has that waxy sheen in the close-up photographs and why it takes natural dye so unevenly and so beautifully. Construction is a single-weft Persian knot on a cotton warp, beaten down firmly so the back shows clean, even knot rows corner to corner, with straight sides, square corners and a tightly wrapped brown selvage. The pile is clipped at a medium height, short enough to hold the detail in the palmettes and star border, long enough to feel substantial underfoot. This is contemporary hand-knotted work at the level that keeps the craft honest, woven to be walked on for decades rather than admired once.
