2'3" x 18' Chobi Ziegler Runner Rug | Soft Green Field, Gold Border | Brand New

Eighteen feet of continuous hand-knotted weaving in a 27 inch width is not a size most weavers take on, and this Chobi Ziegler runner carries it without a stumble: the field pattern stays on register from one end to the other, and the golden border runs true down both long sides. The pile is a close-cropped 1/4" of hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, dense enough to sit flat under traffic and short enough to show the drawing clearly. It is brand new and has never been used, and at 2'3" x 18' it suits the long upstairs corridor or gallery hall that standard 8 and 12 foot runners always leave short. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here, which is the right decision on a rug this long. Instead the field runs an all-over Ziegler layout: large 8 petal rosettes anchored on a slow vertical vine, with broad serrated leaves, lotus palmettes and small 4 point starflowers filling the ground between them. The drawing is loose and open in the Ziegler manner, more relaxed than a city floral, so the repeat reads as a garden rather than a grid. A wide golden beige main border carries its own vine of angular blossoms and paired leaves, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of tiny rosettes and dots. The corner solutions, visible in the close-up of the end, are resolved cleanly rather than cut off, which is a good tell on a long runner.

A Soft Green Field with Gold and Rust

The field is a muted sage green, a celadon tone with grey in it rather than a bright leaf green, and the hand-spun yarn gives it faint horizontal striations that shift with the light. Against it the ornament is drawn in soft gold, cream and pale beige, with grey-brown shading through the leaves and palmette centers that keeps the pattern from floating. Rust is used sparingly, as thin outlines around vines and as small accent blossoms, and it is the only warm note with any saturation, which is exactly why it registers. The main border shifts to a deeper golden beige with camel and light brown, and the selvage returns to green, so the whole runner reads low contrast and quiet: a floor covering that works with oak, pale stone and painted paneling instead of competing with them.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Peshawar is the center of the Chobi and Ziegler trade, and its best workshops are where a serious contemporary Oriental rug in this style comes from today. The wool is hand-spun, which is why the dye sits unevenly enough to breathe, and the finished rug is washed to soften the palette to the antique tone you see here. Knotting is even and the back is tight and legible, with the fringe a continuation of the cotton warps rather than a sewn addition. The 1/4" pile is the practical choice for a piece this narrow and this long: it lies flat, takes foot traffic well, and passes under a door without lifting, which matters when the rug is destined for a hallway runner position that runs the length of a house.
