4'1" x 17'9" Ziegler Runner Rug | Light Green Field with Gold Floral Border | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

This is a long, unusually wide hand-knotted runner: 17'9" of light green field at a generous 4'1" across, which is closer to a narrow gallery rug than to the skinny 2'6" runners most halls end up with. The pile is natural wool on a cotton foundation, clipped low and even so the drawing stays crisp from one end to the other, and the piece is brand new and never used. Photographed rolled in images 1, 2 and 3 simply because of its length, it is a fully finished Oriental rug in the Ziegler manner, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler all-over floral design rather than a central medallion, which is exactly what a runner of this length needs: the pattern repeats down the full 17'9" without a focal point that would sit awkwardly in a hallway. Large fan-shaped palmettes sit on the center line at regular intervals, flanked by long serrated leaves that lean out toward the border, with small rosettes, lattice squares and 4 petal blossoms filling the ground between them. The close view in image 4 shows how each palmette is built up: an ivory and gold crown, a rust heart, and thin outlining that separates every element from the field. The main border runs a gold ground with alternating rosettes and cartouche-like blossoms, contained by narrow guard stripes of vine and reciprocal motifs, and the corners resolve cleanly in image 7 rather than being cut off mid-motif.

The Light Green and Gold Palette

The field is a soft, slightly grayed light green, closer to celadon in flat daylight and reading a touch more olive where the pile bends toward the camera in image 4. Against it the drawing is worked almost entirely in warm tones: honey gold, apricot, wheat and pale ivory for the palmettes and leaves, with rust and brick red used sparingly for the small blossoms, the hearts of the big flowers and the tips of the leaves. The wide main border shifts to a light gold ground, which lifts the whole piece and keeps the green from feeling cool, and a narrow sage outer band ties the edge back to the field. There is gentle abrash across the green, the natural variation you see in hand-spun, hand-dyed wool, and it is what keeps a long run of one color alive underfoot. This is a forgiving palette for a hall: it works with warm woods, brass and cream walls, and it is a genuine alternative to the usual red if you are shopping green rugs.

Made in Pakistan in the Ziegler Tradition

Pakistan is where most of the world's good Ziegler weaving is done today, on vertical looms in the workshops around Lahore and Peshawar, and this runner is a solid example of that work. The wool is hand-spun, which is why the dye takes unevenly in the best possible way, and it is knotted onto a cotton warp and weft that holds a 17'9" length straight without waving. The back in images 5 and 8 shows an even, well-packed weave with clear knot rows, tidy selvages and hand-finished fringe at both ends, and the pile is sheared low, the standard for this style because it lets fine outlining read at a distance.
