9' x 11'5" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Leaf Green Field, Gold Border | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool, New

This 9' x 11'5" Ziegler is the quiet, softly faded kind of Oriental rug that decorators keep asking for and almost never find in this exact green. It is hand-knotted knot by knot in natural wool on a cotton foundation, finished with a light antique wash that takes the shine off the surface and leaves a dry, gently muted handle. The pile is clipped low and evenly, so the drawing reads clearly and the rug lies flat the day it is unrolled. At 108" by 137" it belongs with the 9x12 Oriental rugs that anchor a full seating group or carry a dining table with the chairs pulled out. It is brand new and never used, and a certificate of authenticity ships with it.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries a true all-over design built on a lattice of thick leafy vines that climb the length of the rug and open into large serrated palmettes, round rosettes, cypress-like leaf forms and small square cartouches filled with tiny stepped hatching. The drawing is deliberately bold and slightly naive, with big forms spaced far apart rather than the tight curvilinear detail of a city workshop piece, which is exactly what gives the Ziegler style its relaxed look. Rows of 8 petal rosettes alternate with fan-shaped palmettes across 4 corners of the field, and the pattern runs off the edges rather than stopping at them, so any cropping under furniture still looks intentional. The main border is a continuous meander of palmettes, curling leaves and pear-shaped blossoms, framed by narrow guard stripes and a plain green outer band that finishes the rug like a picture frame.

Leaf Green Field with Gold and Coral

The field is a leaf green that shifts toward soft sage and light green as the light moves across the pile, with a faint abrash through the ground that keeps the large open areas alive rather than flat. Against it, every flower head is worked in warm gold and pale camel, some blossoms shading toward brown and honey where the wool took the dye differently. Coral rust orange appears in small doses: outlines around a rosette, veining inside a leaf, the scattered blossoms on the border ground. The main border itself is a broad camel gold, lighter than the field and almost ivory in places, which is why the green reads deeper than it actually is. The outer band and selvedge are a muted olive green, and the close-up of the back shows the same palette running clean through the knots with no painted or tipped color. It is a green rug that behaves like a neutral, easy with cream walls, walnut furniture, brass and warm whites.

Weaving Quality and Origin

Made in Pakistan, where the Ziegler style has been woven by hand for decades by weavers working the same upright looms and the same hand-spun wool their teachers used. The 19th century Ziegler and Co. workshops built this look for European and American rooms, large scale drawing, open fields and softened color, and the best Pakistani ateliers now produce it at a standard that collectors take seriously. This piece shows it in the construction: the back is even, the knot rows are straight, the selvedges are wrapped tightly in green wool and the fringe is the natural extension of the cotton warps rather than a sewn-on addition. The wool is dense, springy and full of lanolin, the kind of fleece that burnishes with foot traffic instead of matting. A rug this size, hand-knotted at this consistency and finished this cleanly, is built to be walked on for a generation and still look like this.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
