6' x 17'7" Ziegler Gallery Runner Rug | Black Field, Gold Floral Border | Brand New Organic Wool

This is a gallery size runner, not a narrow hall strip: 6 feet wide and nearly 18 feet long, hand-knotted in organic hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation and finished in perfect, never used condition. The field reads almost black in the photographs, a deep brown black ground that makes the gold and ivory flowerheads glow the way a dark lacquer table makes brass glow. Pieces at this length are woven to order rather than stocked, which is why a 6 x 18 in this palette is hard to find on the floor anywhere. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, and this Oriental rug was bought directly from the weaving group, with no showroom markup layered on top.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Ziegler: a large scale all over floral design built from big lobed palmettes, open rosettes and long curled acanthus leaves, all strung on a thin pale vine that travels the full 17'7" of the field without a medallion to interrupt it. The repeat is generous rather than busy, so the black ground stays visible between the blossoms and the pattern never crowds a corridor. Count the layout and you get a central column of crowned palmettes flanked by paired rosettes, each one drawn slightly differently by hand, which is the tell of a genuine knotted weave rather than a printed copy. The border system runs 3 bands: a gold guard stripe with small cross flowers, a wide soft green main border carrying scrolling vinery and shield shaped cartouches, and a second gold band outside it, all framed by a plain dark brown outer edge and ivory fringe at both ends.

Colors: Black, Sage Green and Old Gold

The ground is a dark brown that photographs as black, with the natural variation of hand-spun wool giving it a faint horizontal movement instead of a flat printed tone. Against it the flowers run through honey gold, straw, warm cream and ivory, with soft dusty rose and pale olive shading inside the larger palmettes and small coral red strikes at the centers of the smaller blossoms. The main border shifts the temperature completely: a muted sage green, almost celadon, cooled further by its ivory and gold vine work and punctuated by tiny red squares and black tendrils. Gold guard stripes on either side of that green band keep the two halves of the palette tied together. It is a dark rug that behaves like a warm one, and it will sit comfortably on grey stone, wide plank oak or a pale runner of tile.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Made in Pakistan, where the Ziegler style has been revived and refined by weaving groups using hand-spun, hand-washed organic wool. The name itself comes from the 19th century European trading house that commissioned open, large scale floral carpets for Western drawing rooms, and this piece is woven in that tradition: relaxed spacing, soft mellow dye tones, and a heavy but supple handle. The back shows a clean, even knot grid with straight sides over the full length, which matters enormously on a 17'7" runner because any drift in tension shows immediately when the rug is laid down a long hall or gallery. The wool is lanolin rich and takes light well, the pile is cut at a medium height for durability underfoot, and the ends and selvedges are finished by hand. Brand new, never walked on, and ready to lay flat in a long corridor, a wide entry gallery or down the length of a large open plan room.
