Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design with no medallion, built on a lattice of thin curving vines that link large round rosettes, open palmettes, fan shaped blossoms and small 4 petal flower heads. The scale of the drawing is generous, the way Ziegler patterns are meant to be, so the pattern reads clearly from standing height instead of dissolving into busy detail. Between the big blossoms sit budded stems, serrated leaves and small paired flowers that fill the ground without crowding it. The main border runs a repeating vine of flowering plants punctuated by long dark almond shaped leaf forms spaced evenly along all 4 sides, and it is framed inside and out by narrow guard bands of stylized rosettes and scrolling leaf tips. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug this long is a real test of the cartoon and of the weavers following it.

Color: Black Ground, Antique Gold and Soft Green

The field is deep black with a warm brown cast where the light catches the pile, and that darkness is what makes everything else glow. The flowers are drawn in antique gold, honey, apricot and pale beige, with quiet touches of sage green, celadon and soft plum inside the larger rosettes, so the palette stays warm rather than stark. The main border shifts to a soft sage green ground carrying rust, terracotta and gold flowering vines, with the almond leaf forms picked out in near black for contrast.
