8'8" x 11'8" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Taupe Floral Lattice with Ivory & Gold | Brand New Wool Pile

This is a brand new, never used Chobi Peshawar Ziegler measuring 8'8" x 11'8", hand-knotted in natural hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation and finished with the soft antique wash that gives the whole surface its quiet, sun-warmed tone. It is a decorative Oriental rug in the best sense of the word: no medallion, no centerpiece competing with your furniture, just an even lattice of rosettes running wall to wall. At this footprint it sits squarely in the 9x12 rug size bracket that most designers work with, with enough length to carry a sofa group or a full dining table. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the wool and the origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is built from a continuous diamond trellis drawn in a soft rose-taupe outline, each compartment holding an 8 petal rosette with a small square center. Between the diamonds the weavers filled the negative space with scrolling hooks and interlocking key motifs, so the eye never lands on a single focal point and the repeat reads as one flowing surface. It is a true all-over pattern, which is why the rug works under furniture without losing its drawing. The main border is unusual and worth a close look: large triangular panels alternate point to point, half of them filled with gold tribal branch figures on a pale ground, half with ivory zigzag banding, framed top and bottom by a minor border of small quatrefoil rosettes linked by vine. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, the guard stripes hold a fine rust line, and the ends finish in hand-tied ivory fringe.

A Muted Taupe Palette with Ivory, Blush and Gold

The ground colour is a muted taupe that shifts toward a soft sage blue-green depending on the light and the angle you stand at, which is exactly what the hand-spun wool and the antique wash are meant to do. Over that ground the lattice is drawn in a dusty blush rose, the rosettes are ivory and cream with saffron gold hearts, and thin rust-brown lines outline the border panels and the guard stripes. The border itself lightens to a pale sand and apricot, so the frame glows a shade warmer than the field. There is no harsh contrast anywhere: the darkest note in the rug is the rust outlining, the brightest is the gold, and everything else sits in between. Slight abrash, the natural banding that comes from small-batch dye lots, moves gently across the field and is a mark of hand work rather than a flaw.

Chobi Peshawar Weaving and Quality

Peshawar is the centre of the Chobi trade, and Chobi work is where a great deal of the world's best decorative hand-knotted weaving is now produced. The word chobi refers to the natural, largely plant-based dyes used for the yarn, and the wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, which is why the pile takes colour unevenly and catches the light the way it does in the close-up photographs. The Ziegler idiom itself dates to a 19th century European trading house that commissioned room-size rugs with soft palettes and all-over drawing for Western interiors, and the Peshawar workshops have kept that vocabulary alive. The knotting here is firm and regular, the pile is clipped low and evenly, the selvedges are tight and the rug lies flat straight off the roll. It is new, it is in perfect condition, and it has decades of use ahead of it.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
