Design and Motifs

The field is a classic all over design with no medallion, so nothing competes with your furniture. Large serrated palmettes and multi petal rosettes sit on a thin scrolling vine that runs corner to corner, with smaller lotus heads, curled leaves and tiny buds filling the space between them. The drawing is loose and relaxed rather than tight and mathematical, which is exactly what the Ziegler style calls for: the motifs breathe, the vine wanders, and no two repeats sit perfectly on top of each other. Three borders frame the field. The wide main border carries big ivory and coral palmettes with fan shaped leaves on a sea green ground, flanked by a narrow coral stripe of linked rosettes and an indigo blue guard band of small flower heads. The outer edge finishes plain in undyed ivory wool, and the ends are secured with clean natural fringe as seen in the corner and fold photos.

Color Detail: Beige, Sea Green, Coral and Blue

Beige is the main color and it is not flat. The ground shifts between sand, oatmeal and pale straw depending on how the light crosses the pile, with faint abrash striping visible in the close-up photographs. Against that, the border ground is a muted sea green with a grey cast, closer to sage and aged verdigris than to a bright emerald. The floral work is drawn in coral and soft salmon, with a few warmer terracotta flowers in the outer guard stripe, and the flower centers pick up light blue, slate and a deeper indigo that grounds the whole palette. Ivory and pale gold appear throughout the palmettes and leaf tips, keeping the design legible on the light field.
