12' x 15' Mahal Design Oriental Rug | Beige Field, Black Border | New Hand-Knotted Wool from India

Laid out flat, this 12' x 15' rug reads as one long camel beige field carrying an unbroken floral lattice, with a deep black main border holding the whole thing in place. It is a new, never used piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the Mahal tradition that large room-size weaving has followed for well over a century. At 180 inches long it sits with our oversize 12x15 rugs, big enough to put every leg of a sofa group on the wool and still leave a margin of field showing. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the field runs an all-over Mahal lattice: staggered rows of round rosettes and lobed palmettes linked by thin curling vines and long serrated leaves, with small diamond blossoms and hooked leaf forms filling the spaces between. The repeat is drawn loosely rather than mechanically, so each row sits slightly differently to its neighbor, which is exactly what you want from this style and what keeps a field of this size from looking printed. The border system has 5 bands. The main black stripe carries alternating burgundy 8 petal rosettes and rust palmettes flanked by upright leaf and cypress-like forms. Inside and outside it sit gray-green guard stripes of small circular rosettes, then a taupe brown outer band of orange bars and olive flowerheads, finished with a plain camel selvage edge and ivory fringe at both ends.

A Camel Beige Field Framed in Black

The ground is a warm camel beige that shifts toward sand where the light hits the pile straight on and toward a deeper tan where the nap runs away from you. Against it the drawing is worked mostly in near-black brown, which gives the pattern its outline and its weight. The accents do the rest: rust and apricot orange in the rosette centers, a soft olive and pistachio green in the small leaves and flowerheads, dark burgundy in the border blossoms, and a muted gray-green in the guard stripes that cools the whole palette down. A few motifs carry a pale blue-gray heart, visible in the close-up images, which lifts the field where the beige could otherwise flatten. It is an earth-tone rug rather than a bright one, easy to live with over oak, walnut or pale stone floors.
