10' x 16' Oversize Mahal Design Rug | Soft Coral Field, Ivory Border | Brand New Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a brand new hand-knotted wool rug on a true palace footprint, 10' x 16' of soft coral field wrapped in a wide ivory border. It is a substantial piece of weaving: heavy wool pile on a cotton foundation, clean selvedges, and even hand-knotted fringes at both ends, with the workshop tag in the last photo reading rug no. 6002, size 10 x 16. Rugs of this scale are the hardest thing to source well, because the drawing has to hold together across 160 square feet without going slack, and this one does. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, and it belongs in the small group of oversize rugs that can actually fill a great room end to end.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over Mahal design, a village-style pattern of thick vine tracery that loops from end to end and anchors a series of large hooked palmettes down the center line. Around them sit serrated leaves, split arabesques, small cypress sprays and dozens of tiny blossoms and cross forms scattered into the open ground, the kind of relaxed drawing that keeps a big rug from feeling mechanical. Four corners repeat the same angular framing element so the layout reads balanced from any side of the room. The main border is the showpiece: a run of 8 petal rosettes and open palmettes on ivory, joined by curling stems and flanked by narrow guard stripes of reciprocal trefoils. Every motif is drawn slightly differently by hand, which is exactly what separates a knotted rug from a printed one.

The Soft Coral, Ivory, Green and Blue Palette

The ground is a soft coral red, warmer and lighter than a classic brick, with gentle abrash moving through the field so the color breathes rather than sitting flat. Against it the vinework is drawn in old gold and camel, the leaves in a muted sage and celadon green, and the accents in two blues: a deep navy in the palmettes and cloud bands, and a dusty slate blue in the smaller leaf forms. Ivory does double duty, lighting up the small blossoms inside the field and then opening out into the wide creamy border, where the rosettes come back in the same coral red, a darker garnet and soft olive. It is a warm, sunlit palette rather than a dark formal one, and it will sit comfortably over pale oak, limestone or a light stained floor.

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why. The weavers work on upright looms with a cotton warp and weft and a hand-spun wool pile, following the same village cartoon tradition that gave the Mahal its loose, generous drawing, and finishing with a pile clipped low enough to keep the pattern crisp while leaving real body underfoot. On a 10' x 16' loom that means months of work by several weavers side by side, with the tension held steady the whole way so the rug lies square, which this one does, corner to corner. The result is a new piece with the character of a village weaving and none of the wear: a floor covering built to be walked on hard for decades.
