9'1" x 12'2" Jaipur Rug | Wool and Silk All Over Floral | Burgundy and Black | Made in India

This 9'1" x 12'2" Jaipur rug is a brand new, hand-knotted piece in wool with silk highlights, woven on a cotton foundation in the workshops of Jaipur in northern India. A deep burgundy field carries an all over floral drawing that is framed by a jet black main border and a pair of soft sage green guard bands, and because the flowers and arabesques are picked out in silk, the whole rug shifts in brightness as you walk past it. It is a large, formal, room-filling Oriental rug bought direct from the importer, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the materials and the origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. Instead the field runs as a continuous all over floral design, built on thin scrolling vines that loop the full length of the rug and repeat in mirror image down the center axis. The largest elements are broad gold cloudband arabesques, curled like ribbons, that anchor each repeat; between them sit fan-shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, half-open lotus blooms and long serrated leaves drawn in teal and moss green. Small blossoms in pink, apricot and ivory fill the gaps so that almost no plain ground is left visible. The rug carries 3 borders: a wide black main border with its own vine and large rosette repeat, framed on both sides by sage green guard bands of star rosettes and little paired leaves, with fine red outlines separating each band. The ends finish in plain ivory cotton fringe with a narrow burgundy selvage stripe.

A Burgundy, Black and Gold Color Story

The field is a deep wine burgundy, closer to a dark claret than to a bright red, and the silk in the pile gives it a faint plum shimmer where the light strikes across the nap. Against that the main border reads as a true near black, only warmed by the coppery orange of its vine work, so the frame stays crisp instead of blurring into the field. The gold is the third voice: honey and antique brass in the big arabesques, brighter apricot in the smaller blossoms. The guard borders are a muted sage olive green, a quiet, slightly dusty tone that stops the burgundy and black from feeling heavy, and it is echoed inside the field by teal and forest green leaves. Smaller notes of rose pink, salmon, cream and pale ice blue appear throughout the flower heads. The ivory fringe and ivory outlines are the only pure light in the piece.

The back photograph shows why this piece sits in that upper tier, with small, even knots, a straight and disciplined grid, and motif outlines that stay legible on the reverse, which is the tell for a fine weave rather than a coarse commercial one. The wool is well spun and takes the dye cleanly, and the silk is used sparingly where it earns its place, in the arabesques and flower heads.
