7'11" x 10'7" Oval Sarouk Design Rug | Rose Red Allover Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool
True oval rugs in a room size this generous are uncommon, because the curve has to be drawn and knotted on the loom rather than cut afterward, and the border has to bend with it without the pattern stumbling. This one measures 7'11" x 10'7", so it sits squarely in the practical 8 x 11 rugs range while softening every corner of the room it lands in. The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, the field is a warm rose red carrying an allover floral lattice, and the wide ivory border wraps the oval cleanly from end to end. Condition is excellent, with even pile and full, tidy fringe on both ends. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity confirming its construction, materials and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The floor shots were taken under warm showroom lighting, which pushes an amber cast over the whole frame. In daylight the field reads as a rose red with a salmon lift, closer to the flat overhead image, and the border reads a cleaner ivory than the warm photos suggest.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a classic Sarouk allover, with no central medallion. Instead the field carries a repeating lattice of curling vines that link rounded rosettes, serrated palmettes, split leaves and small budding sprays, each cluster mirrored across the long and short axes so the pattern stays balanced as the oval narrows toward the ends. Look closely at the field detail and you can see the layering: a dark navy rosette sits beside a sage green one, then a camel one, so no two neighbouring flowers repeat in the same colour. The main border is a wide ivory band of alternating palmettes and leafy scrolls, flanked by a slate and rose minor stripe on each side and finished with a plain rose outer guard that follows the curve. Reciprocal dark outlining keeps every flower crisp against the field rather than letting the pattern blur together.
The Rose Red Palette
The ground is a soft rose red, a muted brick that leans toward salmon where the light catches the wool and deepens toward terracotta in the shadowed pile. It is a far friendlier red than the saturated madder grounds of formal city rugs, and it makes this an easy piece to live with next to cream walls, oak floors or natural linen upholstery. Against that ground the accent palette is small and disciplined: ivory for the border and for the tiny highlight petals scattered through the field, sage and olive green for the larger rosettes, near-black navy for the darkest flower heads, and camel and gold for the leaf work. A few pinpricks of true red appear inside the border blossoms and give the whole oval a lift. The plain rose outer band and the ivory fringe frame the pattern without competing with it.
Hand-Knotted in India
This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and we say that with confidence. The weaving belt of northern India has spent decades building workshops that handle classical floral cartoons at a high standard, and an oval is a fair test of that skill: the weavers have to shorten and lengthen the pattern row by row as the loom width effectively changes, keep the border scroll flowing around the curve, and finish both ends without a visible correction. The result here is a well-balanced Oriental rug with a firm handle, a durable wool pile of medium height, and the kind of even, tightly packed knotting that holds the fine floral outlines legible at arm's length and from across the room.
