9'9" x 15' Persian Kashan Rug | Antique 1930s Allover Floral | Rose Red Field, Sarouk Quality Wool
An antique room size piece from the 1930s, this 9'9" x 15' Persian Kashan rug has the glossy, tightly packed wool and the confident floral drawing that collectors look for in pre-war central Persian weaving. The pile is still full from edge to edge, the ivory fringe is original, and the wool has developed the low sheen that only decades of use and washing produce. At nearly 15 feet long it sits comfortably in the oversize range, so it covers a large dining table with chairs pulled out or anchors a full seating group without the furniture standing on bare floor. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity that records the origin, age, materials and exact measurements of the piece you receive.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The field reads as a deeper magenta rose in the full overhead studio photograph and as a softer salmon rose in the floor shots and close-ups. It is the same wool in both, photographed under different lighting. The daylight detail images are the closest match to how the rug looks in a room.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. The field carries an allover repeat of detached floral sprays, 8 petal rosettes, budding palmettes and curling serrated leaves, each bouquet drawn on its own stem and mirrored across the long axis so the pattern reads the same from either end of the room. That open, bouquet based layout is the drawing that made Persian Sarouk rugs famous in American houses in the 1920s and 1930s, executed here with the tighter outlines and finer floral detail of Kashan workshop weaving. Three borders frame the field: a broad navy main band of alternating palmettes and flowering branches, flanked by narrow guard stripes of small blossoms on saffron and rust grounds, with a final outer band running to the selvage. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug of this length takes a weaver working from a full cartoon rather than from memory.
Rose Red Field and Deep Blue Borders
The field is a warm rose red, closer to a coral salmon in daylight, with gentle horizontal abrash where one dye lot met the next on the loom. Against it the floral work is drawn in deep indigo and midnight navy, brightened by sapphire and turquoise blue, saffron gold, deep crimson, terracotta rust, moss green and small flecks of ivory. The main border reverses the scheme entirely, setting coral pink, gold and red blossoms on a dark blue ground, so the border holds the eye at the edges and keeps the rose field reading as light. The close-up photographs show how much of the color sits in the tips of the wool, which is what gives an antique pile of this age its shifting, lit-from-within quality as you walk around it.
Kashan Weaving and Antique Quality
Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan, and its workshops trace their tradition to the Safavid court looms. The local wool is soft and lustrous, and Kashan weavers use it at a knot count fine enough to hold curved floral lines without breaking them into steps. That combination is why Kashan became the everyday benchmark for a good Persian rug in the West: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This piece is a workshop weave on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted in fine wool, with an even handle and a straight, square back visible in the folded corner photograph. Judged by pile depth, dye behavior and the drawing style, it belongs to the 1930s output, and buyers who want to understand the signals themselves can read our guide to dating an oriental rug. Pieces this long are scarce in good condition, and it belongs with our other oversize Persian rugs.
