7'3" x 10' Persian Sarough Rug | Navy Blue All Over Floral Field | Fine Wool, 2000's, Excellent Condition

Woven in the 2000's, this 7'3" x 10' Persian Sarough carries the quality that makes this group worth owning: a deep navy field drawn edge to edge with small flower heads and thin scrolling vines, framed by a brick red floral border. The wool is fine and clipped short at 3/8", which is why the drawing stays legible instead of blurring into the ground, and the handle is firm and heavy from a tightly beaten weave on a cotton foundation. At 7'3" x 10' it lands in the most usable part of the 7x10 Persian rugs range, big enough to carry a sofa and two chairs with the front legs on. Condition is excellent, with full even pile corner to corner and clean ivory cotton fringe at both ends, and the rug ships with its certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The border reads as a deep brick red in the close-up photos and as a lighter salmon red in the full floor shot taken under warmer overhead light. That is a lighting difference between shots, not two different colors and not fading. In daylight the border sits between the two, a warm red with rust in it.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is a true all over floral design, built from mirrored pairs of heavy curling vine scrolls that coil back on themselves like volutes, with upright flowering sprays rising between them and cream lotus palmettes and 8 petal rosettes set at the points where the scrolls meet. Small carnation heads in red and rose run up the stems in tight clusters, and because the repeat is drawn in mirror image across the center axis the pattern reads as calm rather than busy, even at this density. The main border is a red ground carrying alternating lotus palmettes and serrated acanthus leaves in cream, olive and navy, turned cleanly at all 4 corners rather than cut off. Inside and out it is flanked by ivory guard stripes with a small flower and leaf meander, then a narrow sawtooth stripe, and the whole rug finishes on a dark navy selvage that frames the field sharply.

Color Palette

The field is a dark navy blue, close to midnight where the pile falls away from the light, and that depth is what makes this one of the more dramatic navy blue Persian rugs in this size. Against it the drawing runs through a warm range: a soft salmon and beige for the big vine scrolls, cream and ivory for the palmettes and rosettes, clear red and rose for the small flower clusters, rust and olive brown in the leafwork, and touches of light blue inside individual flower heads that lift the dark ground. The border reverses the balance, a warm brick red ground with cream, navy, olive and rust drawing, so the rug has a lit frame around a dark center. Practically speaking the navy hides traffic well, and the red and cream give you an easy bridge to wood floors, leather and mahogany.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Sarough weaving comes from the villages around Arak in central Persia, a group known less for novelty of design than for build quality: dense knotting on a strong cotton foundation, heavily beaten wefts and a short, hard-wearing clip. Persian Sarough rugs earned their reputation in American homes for exactly that reason, they stay flat, they take decades of real use, and the pile keeps its body. The back of this piece shows an even, fine grid of knots with no pulls or irregular rows, which tells you the loom tension was held steady across all 7'3" of width, and the fine wool takes the dye cleanly enough to carry the small floral detail at this scale. It is a workshop-grade village weave in excellent order, never worn down, with the drawing still crisp and the ends and sides original.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
