7'8" x 8' Square Indian Rug | Traditional All-Over Floral | Royal Blue, Gold & Burgundy
A true square at 7'8" x 8', this hand-knotted rug was made in India in the classical tradition, with a royal blue field of gold flowering vines framed by a deep burgundy border. The pile is a fine, high-luster wool that photographs almost like silk, and the close-up images show why: the yarn has a glassy sheen that shifts tone as you walk around it. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, so the pile stands full and even from edge to edge, with crisp selvedges and clean ivory fringe. Square sizes like this are made in small numbers, which makes a genuine 7'8" x 8' hand-knotted piece a useful find for a square room, a round dining table or a stair landing. Every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted and accurately described.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first flat studio photograph was shot under cooler light and pushes the border toward purple. The angled and close-up photographs show the true reading: a royal blue field, warm saffron gold and a true wine burgundy border. This is a lighting difference, not fading and not wear, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The field is a balanced all-over floral composition rather than a medallion layout, so the pattern reads evenly no matter which wall the furniture sits against. Large fan-shaped palmettes and open rosettes alternate with lanceolate leaf forms, small tulip buds and curling serrated leaves, all tied together by a thin gold vine that loops back on itself in paired scrolls. The drawing is mirrored across the center in both directions, which is what makes a square work visually. A narrow gold guard band with a repeating scroll separates field from border, then the main burgundy border carries a procession of shield-shaped palmette cartouches with 8 petal rosette centers set between arching leaves. Outside that sits a second gold band of small rosettes and a final navy outer stripe filled with star-like blossoms, finishing the rug in 4 distinct frames. As a traditional hand-knotted Oriental rug, it follows the old formula closely while keeping the clean, saturated palette of a new piece.
Royal Blue, Burgundy and Gold: the Color Story
The field is a deep royal blue that leans cobalt where the light strikes the pile and almost ink-dark in the shadow, the abrash you can see in the macro shots being the mark of hand-dyed wool rather than a printed ground. Over that, the flowers are drawn in several golds at once: a bright saffron for the big palmettes, a dull olive gold in the leaves, and a pale wheat tone used for outlines so the motifs lift off the blue. Burgundy does most of the work in the border, a true wine red with rose and salmon pink shading inside the palmettes, and it reappears in pinpricks through the field to keep the two zones connected. Supporting colors include a soft teal and olive green in the leaf tips, warm brown in the vine work, and small touches of coral and ivory. If a dark ground is what you are after, this piece sits comfortably with other navy and blue rugs, though the heavy gold content makes it read far warmer than most blue-field rugs do.
Made in India: Weaving Town and Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the workshops of Rajasthan built that reputation on exactly this kind of rug: classical floral drawing, hand-spun and hand-dyed wool, and a knot count high enough to hold the curved line of a palmette without breaking it into steps. This piece is knotted on a cotton foundation with a fine soft silky wool pile, clipped at a medium height so the sheen of the fleece shows but the pattern stays sharp. The back photograph shows tight, regular rows and a firm handle, and the corners lie flat with no roping or waviness, which tells you the loom tension was held properly across all 92 inches of the width. For a buyer who wants the look of a classical workshop rug in a hard-to-find square format, with new wool and no restoration history, this is an honest piece of modern hand weaving.
