7'9" x 9'7" Chinese Oriental Rug | English Garden Grapevine All Over Design | Brown & Green, Never Used

Most hand-knotted rugs this size are built around a medallion. This one is not. The 7'9" x 9'7" field is given over entirely to a climbing grapevine in the English garden manner, leaves overlapping leaf, with heavy fruit clusters hanging at regular intervals across a deep chocolate ground. It is a quiet, botanical, almost wallpaper-like drawing that reads as texture from standing height and only resolves into individual leaves and grapes when you crouch down. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, clipped low and evenly so the fine outlines stay crisp, and the rug is new and never walked on, with the original woven-in warehouse tag still attached as shown in the last photograph. Every piece we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its measured size, material and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The images were taken under different lighting. The flat overhead shot reads browner and flatter overall, while the close-up and corner photographs show the colors truer: a dark chocolate brown ground with clear sage and celadon greens in the foliage. Judge the palette from the detail shots.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over design, built from one repeating unit that the weavers carried corner to corner without a center or a break. Broad 5 lobed vine leaves, each marked with a small dark star at the base, alternate with long serrated willow-shaped leaves, and the vine itself curls through in thin tendrils that loop back on themselves. Hanging from those tendrils are the grape clusters, roughly 30 of them across the open field, each one drawn as a tight stack of individual berries with shaded highlights so the bunch looks rounded rather than flat. The borders continue the same vocabulary instead of switching to a formal scroll: a wide main border of upright leaf sprays with fruit set between them, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small repeating rosettes and tiny paired leaves, then closed with a plain chocolate outer band and a very fine inner line. The 4 corners are resolved cleanly, with the leaf sprays turning rather than being cut off, which is a sign the design was properly mapped before the first row of knots went down.

Color: Chocolate Brown, Sage Green and Shrimp

The ground is a dark chocolate brown, close to coffee, and because it fills every gap between the leaves it does the work a navy field usually does: it pushes the foliage forward and swallows shadows, which is useful in a room that gets a lot of traffic. Over it the greens run through at least 4 values. The large vine leaves are a deep forest to olive green with darker veining, the slender leaves are a lighter sage tipped in cream and pale celadon, and the tendrils pick up a dry khaki tone that bridges green and brown. The fruit is the accent the specs call shrimp, a soft salmon-peach that shades from pale cream on the lit side of each berry to a dusty rose where the bunch turns away. The guard stripes add small flicks of ice blue-green and tan. The overall effect is earthy and low-contrast rather than bright, which makes this an easy rug to live with next to wood furniture, leather and natural linen. It sits comfortably in our selection of brown area rugs while reading green from across the room.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece is honestly made in China, hand-knotted row by row on a cotton warp with a pure wool pile, and it belongs to the broad family of hand-knotted Oriental rug weaving rather than to any Persian town tradition. Chinese workshops built their reputation on exactly this kind of product: a fine, tightly controlled knot count, a closely clipped pile that holds a thin outline without fuzzing, and finishing work you can inspect, flat selvedges, a hand-braided kilim end and a long even cotton fringe. The back is uniform with no bowing or pulled rows, the sides run straight, and the wool has been washed to a soft matte sheen rather than a hard shine. At 7'9" x 9'7" it covers a standard seating group or seats 6 at a dining table with chairs pulled back, and it is one of the more unusual drawings among our 8x10 Oriental rugs for a buyer who has had enough of medallions.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
