7'11" x 9'10" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Green Cypress & Willow All-Over Design | New, Never Used
Ziegler is a drawing style rather than a town, and this piece shows why the style has outlasted the workshop that named it: no central medallion, no busy focal point, just a quiet green garden field that repeats calmly from one end of the rug to the other. It measures 7'11" x 9'10", is brand new and has never been on a floor, and it is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a firm, even handle and a pile deep enough to feel substantial underfoot. At 95 inches by 118 inches it sits squarely in the 8x10 area rug size most buyers are shopping for, which makes the open drawing an advantage: furniture legs land on plain field rather than chopping a medallion in half. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording size, material, weave and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field is a staggered orchard of tall cypress and weeping willow forms, each one drawn as a slender teardrop filled with tiny herringbone rows, latticework or a grid of minute blossoms, so that no two neighbours read identically. Between them runs a continuous vine network of small leaves, buds and star flowers that ties the whole ground together into a true all-over design. Look at the close photographs and you can see the small arched cloud bands and scalloped vine crowns that cap each tree, a detail that gives the repeat its rhythm. The field is framed by 4 bands: a narrow floral inner stripe, a wide gold ground guard border of rosettes and 8 petal stars, a dark navy main border of scrolling palmettes and lotus heads, and a second gold outer band that repeats the small rosette cadence. The green selvedge and ivory cotton fringe finish the ends cleanly.
A Deep Sage Green Field with Gold, Navy and Rust
The ground is a deep sage green with an olive undertone that shifts as you walk around it, reading mossy and soft in raking light and close to forest green when viewed straight down. Against it the trees are worked in cream, ivory, pale wheat and warm camel, with several drawn in a darker tobacco brown so the repeat has weight as well as light. Scattered through the vinework are small blossoms in soft rust and coral pink, with olive and celadon leaves keeping the accents from turning sweet. The main border is a genuinely dark navy blue, nearly black in the shadowed photographs, and it does the heavy lifting of framing the field, while the gold and tan guard bands lift the whole perimeter and pick up the same camel tones used in the trees. Buyers cross-shopping green area rugs will find this one unusually easy to live with, because the green is muted rather than saturated and sits comfortably with wood, leather, brass and warm white walls.
Made in India: Weaving Quality of This Ziegler
This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is done today, and we say that with no hedging. The weaving houses working in the Ziegler idiom spin their own wool, dye in small lots and hold a standard of drawing that village production simply does not reach. You can read the quality on the back: the knotting is even and tight enough to hold the fine herringbone filler inside each tree without blurring, the border outlines stay crisp through every corner turn, and the rug lies dead flat with straight sides and square ends. The wool is the other half of the story, with a soft sheen visible in the detail shots and enough body to take daily traffic for decades. If you are weighing this against Persian work, our guide on the difference between Persian and Oriental rugs explains exactly where each tradition earns its price.
