Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built on a wide diamond lattice of thin scrolling vines, and at each junction sits a large round rosette, some ringed with 16 or more petals, others opening into serrated star palmettes. Between them the weaver scattered smaller blossoms, curling acanthus leaves and slender flowering sprays, so the eye never lands on an empty patch of ground. The repeat is large-scale and relaxed, which is exactly what keeps a rug of this length from looking busy. The main border runs a bold ivory arabesque and rosette meander over red, flanked by a narrow green vine stripe and a fine reciprocal guard, and the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif.

The Light Beige, Coral Red and Green Palette

The ground is a warm light beige that moves between cream and soft sand depending on where the light falls, and it is the reason this piece sits so easily against pale walls, oak flooring and natural linen. Against it the rosettes come in two families: coral to raspberry reds, some deep enough to read as brick, and greens that range from olive through sage to a dark bottle green in the leaf work.
