8'1" x 9'5" Ziegler Chobi Rug | All-Over Rosette Lattice | Hand-Knotted Wool, New

This is a new, never used Ziegler Chobi piece woven in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, and it sits at the quiet end of the color range: a sand beige ground, light green in the guard stripes, and brown drawing carried across the whole surface. At 97 inches by 113 inches the 8'1" x 9'5" format is close to square, which is useful in practice, because it fills a seating area or sits under a round table without the stranded look a long narrow rectangle gives in the same room. The pile is low and even, the selvages and fringe are finished by hand, and the back shows a clear, regular knot grid with no repairs or restoration. If you are comparing it with antique weaves from other regions, the honest description is that this is an Oriental rug made today in the revival tradition rather than a village antique. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, wool pile, size and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true repeat rather than a medallion layout, which is why it reads so calmly from across a room. Rows of linked octagonal curls, drawn as paired spirals, build a lattice, and each compartment holds either an 8 petal rosette or a small 4 lobed cross flower. The rhythm shifts slightly row to row because the weaver followed the drawing by hand, so no two rosettes are identical in weight. A narrow double line frames the field, then the main border repeats the same rosette and curl vocabulary at a larger scale, with a diamond and hook braid guard on the outer edge and a fine stepped minor stripe inside it. Buyers who want pattern without a focal point usually end up in this family of all-over design rugs, and this one is a textbook example: nothing competes with furniture, art or a patterned sofa.

Color: Sand Beige, Light Green and Soft Brown

The ground is a warm sand beige that lightens to near ivory in the border compartments and deepens toward camel in the center of the field, a natural variation from hand-spun yarn and small dye lots. The drawing is brown, ranging from a faint fawn in the lattice curls to a darker cocoa in the outline rows and the inner guard stripes, with a few passages reading slightly rust where the wool took the dye more strongly. Light green sits in the thin stripes beside the main border and ghosts through parts of the field, which is what keeps the palette from going flat and pink under warm lamplight. There is no strong red, no black and no white in the piece, so it works against oak and walnut floors, limestone, brass and linen upholstery, and it is forgiving in rooms that already carry several patterns. The close-up photographs show the color honestly; at 8 feet away the whole rug reads as a soft neutral with brown line work.

Woven in Pakistan: the Ziegler Chobi Weave

Ziegler Chobi rugs are the serious end of contemporary hand-knotted production around Peshawar, where workshops weave classic revival drawings in hand-spun, vegetal dyed wool on cotton warps. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dye palette that gives these rugs their muted, pre-faded look straight off the loom, and the wool is washed to soften the surface without shearing the pile down to nothing. The knotting here is steady and consistent across all 9 feet of length, with straight borders, square corners and no waisting, which is the real test of a workshop piece in this size. Among 8x10 Oriental rugs this one earns its place on construction and restraint rather than on a loud pattern, and because it has never been laid, the pile is full everywhere, edge to edge.
