8'1" x 9'9" Oushak Rug | Gray Field with Pastel All-Over Florals | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool, New

This 8'1" x 9'9" room size piece is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug woven in India in the Oushak tradition, and it is one of those rugs that photographs quietly and then surprises you in person. The field is a soft striated gray built from natural, largely undyed wool, and floating across it is a loose all-over arrangement of palmettes, flower heads and serrated leaves in blush pink, sky blue, saffron yellow, rust, teal and navy. The handle is plump and slightly chunky, the sort of pile that feels good underfoot in a family room, and the back shown in the photographs is even and tight with a clean cotton foundation and natural ivory fringe. Design and Motifs

There is no formal central medallion here. Instead the weaver anchored the field with a large saffron palmette, its heart filled with a teal and pink cartouche, and let everything else radiate outward in a relaxed all over design that never repeats too predictably. Pairs of hooked rosettes in brown and sea green sit to either side, each one outlined in ivory so it lifts off the gray ground. Between them drift dozens of small forms: navy tulips, cream cloud bands, pink and blue butterflies, orange starbursts, tiny 4 armed crosses and stems that read almost like folk embroidery. The main border is a light blue ribbon carrying alternating shield shaped cartouches in pink, lavender, gold and ivory, framed by narrow guard stripes of the same gray as the field. Corners are resolved honestly rather than perfectly, which is exactly what you want in a village style drawing of this kind.

A Gray Ground Lit by Pastel Color

The gray is the whole story. It is not a flat printed gray but a living one, streaked with warm brown and faint olive where the natural fleece changes from row to row, so the field shifts between stone, taupe and charcoal depending on where the light falls. Against that neutral ground the palette stays deliberately soft: powder and sky blue in the border, blush and mauve pink, buttery saffron and gold, rust orange used sparingly for punctuation, sea green and teal in the larger rosettes, and deep navy for contrast in the small motifs. Beige and ivory outlines separate every color from its neighbor and keep the composition from turning muddy. In a room with white or greige walls the rug reads as a calm neutral from across the space, then reveals its pinks and blues up close, which makes it unusually easy to live with next to both warm wood and cool modern furniture.

The Oushak vocabulary of large soft palmettes, generous spacing and gentle color comes out of western Anatolia, but the finest hand-knotted work in this style today is woven in India, where the old workshop skills survived and where the best natural wool is spun and dyed with real care. This piece is honest about that: it is made in India, knotted by hand on a cotton foundation with a natural wool pile, and finished with a medium high shear that keeps the motifs crisp while leaving the pile soft.
