8'11" x 11'7" Chinese Art Deco Rug | Olive Brown Open Field | Navy Blossom Border, Gold Frame

This is a hand-knotted wool rug from China, drawn in the Art Deco manner that made Chinese weaving famous in the West: a wide, quiet field, one narrow gold frame, and a deep navy border carrying flowering vine. At 8'11" x 11'7" it sits squarely in the 9x12 area rug footprint most buyers are shopping for, so it will float a sofa, two chairs and a coffee table with margin all around, or sit under a 8 seat dining table with chairs staying on the pile when pulled out. As an Oriental rug it belongs to the Chinese school rather than the Persian one, with a thicker, softly clipped pile and far more open space in the drawing. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The field reads as a lighter olive green in the flat overhead photograph and as a deeper olive brown in the showroom floor shots. That is lighting and pile direction, not two different rugs. The darker streak visible toward the middle of the field is a natural color change in the wool combined with the way the nap lies, not a stain, not fading and not wear. The condition report on this piece is perfect, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The composition is built on restraint. The field is left open, with no medallion and no repeating lattice, so the eye lands on a single vase of flowers at the center: a ribbed vessel banded in blue and rust, holding a spray of large blue peonies, small peach blossoms and cream buds on dark stems. A vase of the same family stands in each of the 4 corners of the inner field, each one taller and fuller than the center spray, and between them the ground is dotted with small 5 petal blossoms and 3 leaf sprigs scattered at wide intervals. A narrow gold band frames the field and carries stepped Greek key, or fret, motifs at the corners and midpoints, a straight-lined counterweight to all the curved flowering vine. The wide navy outer border repeats a meandering blossom branch with ivory outlined flowers, teal leaves and rust centers, turning cleanly at each corner. Selvages and the ivory fringe finish it simply, in keeping with the rest of the drawing.

Colors: Olive Brown Field, Navy Blue Border, Gold Frame

The dominant tone is a soft olive brown that leans green when light rakes across the pile, the sort of muted ground that reads as a warm neutral in a room rather than as a color statement. Against it, the border is a saturated navy blue deep enough to look near black in low light, with visible tonal movement through the wool where the indigo shifts lighter and darker along the length. The gold frame is a dry mustard rather than a bright yellow, and it is the warmest note on the rug. Inside the flowers, medium teal and a clear cornflower blue do most of the work, lifted by peach and pale rose petals, rust centers, ivory outlines and small touches of cream. Dark navy leaves give the sprays their structure. The palette is limited on purpose, roughly 6 colors carried across the whole 8'11" x 11'7" surface, which is why it settles easily next to brown leather, walnut, brass and off-white plaster.

Made in China: Weaving and Quality

This is honest Chinese work, hand-knotted knot by knot on a cotton foundation, and the back photograph shows it clearly: even rows, tidy overcast selvages and a consistent knot count across the width with no pulling at the edges. Chinese Art Deco rugs were never about the highest possible knot count; that tradition of the 1920s and 1930s built its reputation on bold open layouts, a thick wool pile clipped level and slightly sculpted around the motifs, and colors chosen for how they would look in a Western interior. The wool here has the long staple, slightly glossy character that takes light well and is the reason the ground shifts between olive green and brown as you walk around it. Practically, a medium knot count with a heavier pile means a rug that lies flat, feels substantial underfoot and takes traffic in a living room or dining room without showing it, which is exactly what a 9x12 floor covering needs to do.
