8'2" x 11'2" Chinese Art Deco Rug | Camel Ivory Open Field | Navy Floral Border
Almost everything about this rug is what the weaver chose to leave out. The field runs camel ivory and completely open from end to end, the border is a single band of deep navy that reads near black under low light, and the only drawing anywhere is a handful of coral blossoms set at the corners where field meets border. It is hand-knotted in wool with a 3/8" pile on a cotton foundation, and at 8'2" x 11'2" it covers a standard large living or dining room with room for furniture legs on all 4 sides, which puts it among the most practical 8x11 rugs we carry. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The close-up of the field shows faint crease lines and a soft shadow band across the pile. These are fold marks from pallet storage, not wear, not fading and not damage. An open camel field shows every crease far more plainly than a patterned one. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion, no secondary guard stripe and no repeating pattern, which is exactly the Art Deco idea: one flat plane of color, one hard frame, and asymmetric ornament placed like a signature rather than a system. Each of the 4 corners carries a different flowering branch. One spray sends a thin stem out of the navy and into the camel field, ending in a curling tendril drawn in a single line of red, while another lays open peony heads and a 5 point maple leaf flat against the dark ground. The blossoms are outlined by clipping the pile along the color change, so the flowers sit slightly proud of the border and catch light at the edges, a hand carving step particular to this style of weaving. Because nothing competes for attention, the eye reads the rug as a shape first and a pattern second, which is why these designs sit so comfortably under modern and mid-century furniture.
A Camel Ivory Field Against Deep Navy Blue
The field is an undyed to lightly dyed camel ivory that shifts with the nap: pale sand and almost white when viewed from one end, warmer biscuit and tan from the other, with gentle abrash banding across the width where the wool batches changed. The border is a saturated navy blue so dark it photographs as black in the overhead view, and it does the heavy lifting, grounding the whole rug and making the pale field look intentional rather than empty. Against that navy, the flowers run coral, brick red and a faded salmon pink, with leaves in muted sage and blue green and a thin rust line for the stems. The reverse of the rug is worth looking at for color: on the back the corner spray shows its original, unexposed tones, softer pinks and a cooler green, which tells you the face has mellowed evenly rather than faded in patches.
Woven in China: Art Deco Workshops and Weaving Quality
This is a Chinese weave, and the Art Deco format belongs to the coastal workshops around Tianjin and Beijing that built their production for the American market, trading the dense classical repeats of older Chinese weaving for open grounds, plain frames and sparse botanical drawing. Quality in this group is not measured the way it is in a fine city weave; the knot count is deliberately moderate so the pile can be left thick at 3/8" and then clipped and carved by hand around each motif, which is impossible on a short, very fine pile. The back photo shows a clean, even knot with straight rows, tight selvedges and a plain cotton foundation, the marks of a proper workshop piece rather than a rushed one. If you are weighing this against a city weave from another tradition, it helps to understand how an Oriental rug is judged by region, because the standards genuinely differ, and by the standards of its own tradition this one is a strong example in excellent condition.
