8'2" x 10'2" Chobi Oriental Rug | Ivory Field, Dark Brown Border, Vegetable Dyed Wool | Brand New

This 8'2" x 10'2" Chobi is hand-knotted in India in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, with a low 3/8" pile that lets the drawing read cleanly from across a room. The field is ivory, close to undyed cream, and it is framed by a deep chocolate brown border that does all the visual work in the room. It is a contemporary Oriental rug in the classic Chobi manner, brand new and never used, and it lands in the most requested 8x10 rug size for a sofa group or a six-seat table. Every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted by hand, knot by knot.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The ivory ground carries a repeating all-over floral design built on thin, almost hairline vine scrolls that run corner to corner and tie every element together. Along those vines sit large fan-shaped palmettes, serrated lancet leaves, small 8 petal rosettes and budding flower heads, alternating in staggered rows so the eye keeps moving rather than settling in one place. The main border repeats a big open rosette with a pale center, separated by upright palmette sprays and small darting leaves, and it is held between two narrow ivory guard bands filled with a meandering flower and leaf vine. The corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning cleanly rather than being cut off, which is a quick tell for how carefully the design was mapped before weaving began.

A Study in Ivory, Chocolate Brown and Muted Gold

The field is a warm ivory with a faint sand cast, not a stark white, so it sits comfortably against oak floors, walnut furniture and cream walls. Against it the border reads as a deep chocolate brown with a slight aubergine warmth in the pile, dark enough to anchor the whole rug and to pick up brown leather or dark wood in a room. The motifs are filled with old gold and camel, softened rust, and small strikes of brick red at flower tips and leaf edges. Muted sage green appears in the leaves and a soft slate blue turns up in the rosette centers, both quiet enough that they never fight the neutral ground. This is the vegetable dyed palette Chobi rugs are known for: earth tones with gentle tonal variation across the pile rather than flat, uniform machine color, which is exactly what keeps a large neutral rug interesting up close.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a fair example of why. It is woven on a cotton warp and weft, knotted in hand-spun wool that takes natural dye unevenly in the best way, then clipped to a low 3/8" pile and finished with hand-tied fringes at both ends. The back, shown here under a ruler, is even and legible row to row, with the design coming through as clearly as it does on the face, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted rug. Chobi weaving takes its name from the wood-toned natural dyes used in the palette, and the workshops producing it in India have refined the type over decades into something that suits modern American interiors without looking new or manufactured.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
