10'2" x 14' Khotan Chobi Rug | Brown Field with Ivory All Over Rosette Border | Hand-Knotted Fine Wool, New

This is a large, quiet, room-filling piece: a hand-knotted Khotan Chobi measuring 10'2" x 14', woven in fine wool on a cotton foundation and never used. The drawing is taken from the old Khotan weavings of East Turkestan, reinterpreted in the Chobi palette of soft mineral browns, sand and cream that reads as neutral from across a room and reveals its detail up close. The pile is low and evenly sheared, the handle is supple, and the selvedges and ends are clean and tight, as you would expect from a brand new workshop weaving. Every rug we ship, including this one, comes with our certificate of authenticity confirming that it is 100% hand-knotted, along with its full measurements and materials.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the field carries an all over rosette lattice, a repeating grid of large 8 petal rosettes set inside a framework of curling vine, small cruciform blossoms and long serrated leaves. The rosettes alternate in scale and fill, some drawn solid in gold-beige, some outlined with a pale halo and a blue center, so the repeat never looks mechanical across 14 feet of length. A narrow inner guard of stepped hooks separates field from border. The wide main border is built from round rosette cartouches spaced between 6 pointed stars and diamond links, and it is flanked by two outer guard stripes of tiny running blossoms. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly rather than being cut off, which is the mark of a properly drawn workshop cartoon.

A Study in Brown, Beige and Soft Blue

The field is a muted brown that leans toward taupe and mocha rather than chocolate, with a gentle abrash that lightens and deepens in horizontal bands as the wool takes the dye differently from batch to batch. Against that ground the ornament is worked in warm sand, gold-beige, wheat and clean ivory, while the borders reverse the scheme entirely: an open cream to light beige ground carrying brown outlines and soft, dusty blue accents in the rosette centers, the stars and the leaf tips. That pale blue is the only cool note in the rug and it does exactly what it should, lifting an otherwise earth-toned palette so it does not go flat. Small touches of gray-green and rust appear in the vine work. It is a low-contrast, sophisticated neutral that sits easily with oak floors, linen upholstery and warm white walls.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in Pakistan, where the Chobi and Peshawar workshops have spent three decades perfecting hand-spun wool, softened natural-looking dyes and classical Turkestan and Ziegler cartoons. Chobi work is prized for exactly what you see in the close-up photographs: hand-spun yarn that holds subtle tonal variation, a level low shear that shows the drawing crisply, and a firm, straight back with even knot rows. As an Oriental rug rather than a Persian one, it offers the same knot-by-knot construction and longevity in a calmer, more contemporary register.
