This is a hand-knotted Chobi Peshawar in a quiet, unusual palette: a soft light blue ground carrying gold and beige drawing, wrapped in a wide camel border. It is a genuine handmade Oriental rug with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, confirmed on the weaver's tag photographed on the reverse, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. At 9' x 12'2" it covers a standard living or dining area completely, and because the field is pale rather than dark it opens the room up instead of anchoring it in shadow. The pile is full and even across all 4 corners, the selvedges are intact and the fringes are original, so the rug is ready to lay down and use.

Design and Motifs

The drawing borrows from the old Khotan and Samarkand weavings of Central Asia, and it is the pomegranate that carries the field: dozens of them, some drawn as round fruit with a crown, some stylized into the tall crosshatched pineapple form, scattered in staggered rows across the open ground. Between them sit small leaf sprays, 4 petal blossoms and tiny stars, with a pair of squared rosette medallions and a bracket shaped vase motif marking the central axis. Large angular palmette bursts fill the 4 corners of the field. This is a true all over design with no central medallion, so furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting the composition in half. The wide main border runs a vine of rosettes and pomegranate roundels, framed inside and out by narrow guards, and the outermost band is a crenellated Greek key meander in blue and gold that gives the whole rug a crisp architectural edge.

The Light Blue, Gold and Sage Palette

The field is a soft powder blue with a distinct sage green cast where the light catches the wool, the kind of gentle abrash you only get from handspun yarn taken through plant based dye baths. Against it the motifs are drawn in warm gold, apricot and pale honey, with a few deeper rust accents on the small stars and leaf tips that keep the field from going flat. The border shifts to a pale camel and beige that reads almost ivory in daylight, and its ornament is worked in the same gold family so the transition from field to border is tonal rather than abrupt. Touches of blue reappear in the guard stripes and the Greek key band, tying the two halves of the palette together. It is a calm, low contrast colour scheme that sits easily with oak and walnut floors, linen upholstery, brass and pale plaster walls, and it photographs beautifully in a bright room.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Tradition

Peshawar, in the northwest of Pakistan near the Khyber corridor, became one of the great modern weaving centres of the last few decades, built on generations of knowledge carried across the border and on some of the best highland wool available anywhere. Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a reference to the plant, root and wood based dyes these workshops use instead of harsh chemical colour, and it is the reason the blues and golds here look aged rather than new. The wool is handspun, which is why the surface takes light unevenly and gives the field its depth, and the rug is knotted on a cotton foundation and then given a long soft wash that relaxes the pile and mellows the tone.
