10'2" x 18' Chobi Peshawar Rug | Neutral Olive & Ivory All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a palace length Chobi Peshawar, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 10'2" x 18'. The field is a quiet olive-taupe, the border a wide ivory band, and the whole drawing is deliberately low in contrast so the rug reads as texture and tone before it reads as pattern. Design and Motifs

The field carries a full all-over floral design in the Ziegler manner: a lattice of thin scrolling vines that spreads corner to corner with no central medallion, punctuated by large ivory palmette rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves, small 8 petal blossoms and paired lanceolate leaves that curl back on themselves. Because there is no medallion, the drawing repeats comfortably over the full 18 foot length instead of forcing furniture around a center point. The main border is a wide ivory band of alternating palmettes and rosettes joined by an undulating vine, with heavier corner cartouches turned cleanly at all 4 corners, and it is framed inside and out by narrow guard stripes of reciprocal leaf and dart. Small rust red outlines appear inside a few of the border blossoms and field buds, which is the only sharp accent anywhere in the piece.

A Neutral Palette of Olive, Taupe and Ivory

The ground is an olive-taupe that shifts with the light, reading greener under daylight and browner under lamps, with fine horizontal abrash striations from handspun yarn running across the field. Against it the ornament is worked in ivory, bone, wheat and soft gold, with sage green leaves and a scattering of pale dove blue in the smaller blossoms that only becomes obvious up close. The border steps up to a light cream that carries gold and honey palmettes, grey-green vinework and the same muted blue touches, so the frame lifts the field without ever fighting it. Low contrast neutrals on this scale are forgiving in a busy room: the rug grounds the floor, absorbs traffic marks, and sits comfortably with oak, walnut, linen upholstery and warm metals.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Chobi Peshawar rugs are made in and around Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, where weavers took up the old Ziegler Sultanabad repertoire and adapted it to a softer, calmer palette. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dyes that give these rugs their muted tone straight off the loom rather than through chemical washing. The wool is handspun, which is why the pile takes dye unevenly in the best way and produces that gentle striping across the ground. The back photograph shows an even, well packed weave on a cotton foundation with straight rows and no pulled corners, which matters enormously at this width: a rug 10 feet across will show any tension fault the moment it is laid flat, and this one lies clean and square.
