Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic all-over composition in the Peshawar workshop manner: broad curling palmettes, split leaves and serrated vine scrolls repeating across the full field, with a matching main border and a pair of narrow guard stripes that frame the ends. What makes this piece unusual is the contrast, or rather the deliberate lack of it. The weavers worked the motifs in tones only a step away from the ground, so the palmettes and vines read as ghosted silhouettes rather than hard outlines, closer in effect to a faded 19th century workshop rug than to anything freshly drawn. The close detail photographs show the scrollwork clearly: rounded palmette heads, hooked leaf tips, and a border of stacked rosettes and reciprocal motifs.
