8'2" x 11'8" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Floral Medallion | Coral & Blue Palette
A quiet, classically drawn Tabriz on an ivory ground, this 8'2" x 11'8" rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with ivory fringe at both ends. The drawing is the reason to own it: a single coral medallion floating in an open cream field that has been filled edge to edge with scrolling vinework rather than crowded with it. At 8'2" x 11'8" it covers the same footprint most buyers shop for in the 8x12 band, one of the most usable proportions among large Persian rugs, with enough length to carry a sofa group or a long dining table. The pile is even, the colors are settled rather than raw, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first image is a flat studio photograph and reads deeper and redder than the rug does in person. The showroom floor photographs and the medallion close-up show the truer reading: a soft ivory field with coral and teal blue. This is a lighting difference between cameras, not fading, wear or any inconsistency in the weave.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a lobed coral medallion built in layers: an outer coral frame of pointed lobes, a blue inner cartouche, and at the very core a gold disc carrying an 8 petal rosette. Slender floral pendants reach out from the top and bottom of the medallion into the field. Around it the ivory ground is worked with a curvilinear arabesque, long sweeping vine stems that curl back on themselves and carry palmettes, lotus heads, serrated leaves and small rosettes in blue, coral and soft green. All 4 corners are anchored by large blue floral spandrels, each one filled with roses and scrolling leaf work so the open field reads as a framed panel. The main border is a coral band of alternating palmettes and rosettes joined by a running vine, flanked by a blue guard stripe of leaf and blossom and by narrower minor stripes in ivory and dark navy. The corner detail photograph shows how cleanly the border turns, a drawing test that separates workshop weaving from village copies.
A Palette of Ivory, Coral and Teal Blue
The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream and old parchment than to white, and it takes light well on both pale and dark floors. Against it, the medallion and main border run a soft coral that shades toward salmon and light terracotta depending on the angle of the light. The blues do the structural work: a dusty teal in the guard stripes and corner spandrels, a darker indigo in the vine outlines and the medallion cartouche, and small clear blue flowerheads scattered through the field. Supporting colors are restrained and used in small amounts, olive and sage green in the leaves, pale gold in the rosette centers, pink in the roses, and charcoal outlining that keeps every motif legible. There is no harsh contrast anywhere in the rug, which is why it reads as calm at room scale even though the field is densely drawn. Ivory, coral and blue together make it an easy match for neutral upholstery, walnut and oak furniture, and blue and white ceramics.
Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most consistent commercial weaving city for centuries, with a workshop culture organized around a designer's cartoon and a master weaver working to it. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, and it is the curved line that tells you where a piece falls: the flowing vine, the unbroken circle of a medallion lobe and the neat resolution of the border corners in this rug all require a knot count well above village work. The back photograph shows a tight, regular knot face on a cotton foundation with no lazy lines and clean, even wefting, and the wool pile has the slight sheen that good northwest Persian fleece keeps after decades. Structurally this is a rug built to be used, not stored, which is the reason well woven Persian Tabriz rugs remain the default recommendation for a main living space that has to look right for the next 30 years.
