8'2" x 9'8" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Bluish Gray All-Over Floral Field | Ivory Border | Excellent Condition
Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, this Chobi Peshawar measures 8'2" x 9'8" and does the hardest thing a decorative rug can do: it carries a full classical floral drawing without raising its voice. The field is a soft bluish gray, closer to weathered slate than to true blue, and the flowerheads sitting on it are drawn in ivory, wheat and sage green rather than the saturated reds and navies of older Oriental workshop pieces. The wool has a low, even clip with a faint sheen that shifts as you walk across it, and the handle is supple enough to lie flat straight away. At 8 by 10 feet it reads as a room-size piece without crowding, and it is one of the easier formats to place, which is why so many buyers start with 8x10 Oriental rugs. Every rug we ship, this one included, leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, materials, origin and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field runs as a balanced all-over lattice, with large lobed palmettes and 8 petal rosettes set at regular intervals and joined by thin, pale vine scrolls that you only notice once you look for them. Between the big flowerheads sit smaller blossoms, cypress-like buds and long serrated leaves that curl back on themselves, the detail visible in the close-up image. The drawing is mirrored across both axes, so the pattern repeats cleanly in all 4 corners, and the field is enclosed by a narrow guard stripe, then a wide ivory main border carrying its own procession of palmettes, split-leaf rosettes and hooked vine, then a second guard stripe and a plain outer edge. The corners of the main border are resolved properly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is the first thing to check on an all-over design of this type.
Bluish Gray, Ivory and Sage Green
The field colour is the selling point. It is a muted bluish gray with a cool cast, the kind of tone that behaves like a neutral against white, greige or charcoal walls but still registers as blue when light hits it from the side. Within the flowerheads the palette steps through ivory, cream, pale wheat, tan and a dusty sage green, with a few blossoms shading toward soft rose and a warm caramel brown used sparingly for the leaf outlines and the vine tips. The main border is a clean ivory that lifts the whole piece and keeps the gray from going flat, while the thin guard stripes pick up the same wheat and brown as the field motifs. Nothing in the palette is high contrast, so the rug sits quietly under furniture rather than competing with it, and it pairs easily with other grey and charcoal rugs and with blue-gray upholstery.
Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Style
Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, has grown into one of the most consistent hand-knotting centres in the world, and the Chobi group is its best known output. Chobi means wood, a reference to the subdued, wood-toned dye palette the style is built on, and the drawing follows the old Sultanabad and Ziegler manner: large-scale floral repeats, generous spacing, soft colour. The weavers work on upright looms with hand-spun wool and finish the rug with a wash that knocks the sharpness off the colours and gives the pile its light lustre. Knot by knot this is a modern piece rather than an antique, but the technique is identical to what the term Oriental rug has always described, and the wool quality is why these rugs hold a crisp pile under furniture for decades. Condition here is excellent, with full even pile, tight selvages and clean fringe at both ends.
