5' x 7' Chobi Peshawar Oriental Rug | Ivory All-Over Floral Field | Hand-Knotted Wool, Excellent Condition
This 5' x 7' Chobi is the quiet kind of hand-knotted rug that does the hardest decorating job of all: it fills a room with real handmade texture without adding a single loud note. The whole piece reads ivory at first glance, and the drawing only emerges as you walk around it, which is exactly what the Chobi weavers of Peshawar are after. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile, a weight that lies flat without a thick underlay and takes daily traffic well. Buyers comparing this against a classic Persian piece will find the honest distinction laid out in our guide to a handmade Oriental rug, and if you are shopping the footprint first, the full range of 5x7 Oriental rugs sits alongside it. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral composition built from broad palmettes, serrated leaves and thin connecting vines, with small 8 petal rosettes dropped between them. The drawing is deliberately held at low contrast, no more than a shade or two away from the ground, so the pattern behaves like a watermark rather than a print. A single narrow main border runs all 4 sides, filled with alternating rosettes and leaf forms and framed by plain guard stripes, and the corners resolve cleanly where the border turns. Look at the close-up photographs and the detail comes forward: a faint hexagonal motif at the center of the field, soft outlining around each leaf, and the slight irregularity in the repeat that tells you a weaver, not a machine, set the pattern out.
The Ivory and Sand Color Palette
The ground is ivory, warm rather than stark, and it shifts gently across the width with the soft abrash that handspun wool always gives. Into that ground the weavers set the motifs in cream, oatmeal and a dusty sand, with the occasional vine or rosette picked out in pale gold or a light tan that is the darkest value anywhere on the rug. The name Chobi points to wood, a reference to the plant based dye recipes used on this family of rugs, and the finishing wash is what pulls the tones down to this bleached, sun softened register. The practical result is a neutral that flatters oak, walnut, linen, leather and white walls equally, and in natural daylight the wool holds a quiet sheen that keeps the palette from ever looking flat or chalky.
Peshawar Weaving and Build Quality
Chobi rugs come from the workshops around Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, a weaving center that revived the old Oushak and Ziegler style of drawing and made it its own over the last few decades. The method is traditional throughout: hand-spun wool knotted row by row onto a cotton warp and weft, hand-cut to an even 3/8" pile, then washed and sun dried to settle the color. You can read that quality in the photographs, where the ruler sits flat on a straight, consistent weave with no ridging, and in the flat-woven selvage and hand-knotted fringe at the ends. Pakistani Chobi work of this grade is among the best contemporary hand-knotted production anywhere, and it is the reason a rug this soft in color is still built to take years of real use.
