8'4" x 19'6" Oversize Indian Agra Design Rug | All-Over Floral Vine on Red | Fine Wool Pile
At 8'4" x 19'6" this is a true gallery-length piece, long enough to carry a 20 foot room from one end to the other without a seam or a second rug. The field is a deep tomato red carrying an all-over Agra floral vine in gold, ivory and soft blue, framed by a wide ivory main border. The pile is fine wool clipped to 3/8", low enough for dining chairs to slide and long enough to hold the drawing crisply. Photographs 4, 5 and 13 show the reverse: an even, tightly packed knot line on a cotton foundation, with the pattern reading almost as clearly from the back as from the front. Woven in the 2000's and in excellent condition, this Oriental rug ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, its materials and its origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The close-up photographs, particularly images 6 and 9, show faint horizontal banding across the red field. This is abrash, the natural variation between dye lots of hand-spun wool, and it is a mark of hand production rather than fading, wear or damage. It is far less visible in person and across the full length of the rug than it appears in a macro shot taken under direct light.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a classic Agra composition: no central medallion, just a continuous lattice of thin gold vines that travels the full 19'6" and repeats in offset rows. Anchoring the pattern are large lotus palmettes, seen in detail in images 7 and 8, each built from layered gold and ivory petals with a pale blue heart and small ruby red dots. Between them sit 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves, curling split-leaf tendrils and small tulip-like buds, all mirrored across the long axis so the rug reads the same from either end of the room. This kind of all-over floral design is the practical choice at this length, because there is no medallion to be swallowed by a dining table or a long sofa run. The wide ivory main border carries its own rhythm of rosettes and curved cloud-band leaves, contained by narrow gold guard stripes filled with 4 petal cross flowers, and the corners are properly resolved rather than cut off, which is the first thing to check on a rug this long.
The Red Field and Ivory Border Palette
The ground is a warm, slightly brick-toned red that shifts with the light, reading as deep burgundy in the overhead shot and as a brighter tomato red where the pile catches the sun in images 7 and 9. Against it the vinework is drawn in a pale honey gold, while the palmettes and leaves move through butter gold, antique ivory and cream. The quiet accents are what lift the palette: soft duck-egg blue inside the flower heads, a dusty sage green on some of the leaf tips, and small clear points of dark ruby that pick up the field color. The main border is a creamy ivory, close to unbleached wool, so the frame reads soft rather than stark white, and the flowers inside it repeat the same gold, blue and ruby notes. The outer edge is finished with a red overcast selvedge and the fringe is ivory cotton. In a room it will pull out warm woods, brass, aged leather and cream upholstery without fighting them.
Made in India in the Agra Tradition
Agra has been a weaving center since the Mughal court commissioned carpets there in the 16th century, and the workshops of northern India still draw on that vocabulary of palmettes, scrolling vine and generous ivory borders. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug shows why: hand-spun wool with real luster, dye lots handled honestly, straight selvedges, and a back that stays flat and square over almost 20 feet, which is the hardest thing to control at this length. Weaving a rug this size takes a wide loom, a team of weavers working in step, and many months on one piece, which is why finished oversize rugs in a narrow 8 foot width and a 19'6" run are so rarely offered. For a long dining room, a double-height great room or a gallery hall that needs one continuous floor, the proportion here does work that no standard 9x12 can do.
