12' x 17'2" Oversize Indian Jaipur Rug | All-Over Floral Palmette Design | Dense Wool Pile, Never Used

This is a big, serious floor piece: 12' x 17'2" of hand-knotted wool with a deep burgundy field and a dense 3/8" pile that stands up under the hand. It has never been used, and the pile still has the full bloom and sheen it left the loom with. Jaipur weaving takes the classical drawing of the old court workshops and puts it on a cotton foundation with heavy, lustrous wool, which is why a rug at this scale feels substantial rather than papery. Rugs at 12 by 17 are hard to find in good drawing and good color together, so this one belongs in the small group of genuinely usable oversize area rugs that can carry a great room without looking stretched. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral design built from large fan palmettes, each one opening like a spray of curling petals above a cupped base, set in staggered rows so the eye moves diagonally across the rug rather than settling on any one point. Between the palmettes run split leaves, small lotus heads and thin curling tendrils that fill the ground without crowding it. There is no medallion, which is exactly right at this size, since furniture can sit anywhere on the field without covering a focal point. The main border carries a procession of broad rosettes and serrated leaves linked by a scrolling vine, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of connected floral heads. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly rather than being cut off, which is a mark of a weaver following a well drawn cartoon.

A Burgundy Field With Gold, Sage and Brown

The ground is a deep wine burgundy, warm rather than orange-leaning, and it reads darker in raking light and brighter where the pile lies toward you. The palmettes are worked in antique gold, honey and pale ivory, with sage and celadon green used inside the leaves and the palmette hearts, so the green cools the red without fighting it. Brown and soft camel tones outline the drawing and keep the florals from floating. The main border reverses the balance: a burgundy ground carrying gold and green blossoms, bracketed by guard stripes that shift to a light sage and straw tone, which gives the whole rug a visible frame from across a room. Because the wool is glossy, the golds pick up light and shift between ivory and amber through the day, and the burgundy holds its depth under lamplight in the evening.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of northern India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. The looms there are set up for exactly this kind of piece: a cotton warp and weft strong enough to hold a 17 foot length straight, and a thick wool pile clipped at 3/8" for weight and wear. The back, visible in the last photo, shows even rows and a clear, legible knot with no slack in the weave, and the ivory fringe is the warp itself rather than a sewn-on addition. Buyers comparing a piece like this against Persian city weaving will find the drawing vocabulary closely related, and the practical differences are covered in our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug. At this scale the rug is heavy, and it still ships free to all 50 states.
