9'1" x 12'3" Jaipur Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral on Brown | Dense Lustrous Wool | Never Used
A room-size traditional piece that reads quiet from across the room and complicated up close. This rug measures 9'1" x 12'3", was hand-knotted in Jaipur on a cotton foundation with a 100% wool pile, and has never been on a floor: no wear, no restoration, no fading. The pile has the heavy, slightly glossy handle you get from good Indian highland wool, which is why the gold and ivory drawing lifts away from the dark ground instead of sinking into it. It is one of the more usable sizes we carry, sitting right in the middle of our 9x12 Oriental rugs, and every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion. The field is a true all-over composition: a continuous ivory vine runs edge to edge, splitting again and again to carry large open palmettes, lotus heads, serrated acanthus leaves and small 8 petal rosettes, each one outlined in black so the shape stays crisp against the dark ground. Look at the close-up photographs and you can see the drawing is mirrored on both the long and short axes, so the pattern resolves into pairs of big blossoms flanking a shield-shaped palmette at the center. The main border carries a broad arabesque of leafy cartouches and curling split-leaf vines, turned cleanly at all 4 corners, with a narrow ivory meander on the inside and a green rosette stripe on the outside. The outermost edge finishes in plain brown, which frames the whole thing and keeps the border from fighting the field.
The Brown Field and Its Beige, Green, Pink and Gold Accents
The field is a deep coffee brown, warm rather than grey, and it shifts with the light: under direct light it opens up to a milk-chocolate tone, in shade it goes nearly espresso. Over it the drawing is worked in old gold, honey, wheat and ivory, with soft rose pink in the rosette centers, olive and sage green in the leaves, and small hits of deep burgundy red that act as punctuation rather than color blocks. The wide main border steps up into a muted blush beige, almost a dusty salmon, which is the brightest area of the rug and gives the composition its light. Between border and field sits a thin olive green guard stripe scattered with pink and gold flower heads. If you are building a scheme around dark woods, cognac leather or brass, this belongs with the brown area rugs rather than the neutrals.
Jaipur Weaving and Knot Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the few places still weaving traditional court-style florals at a serious level, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. That is simply where the skilled looms are. This piece shows it in the curved line: the vine turns smoothly and the palmette outlines hold their shape, which is only possible at a knot count fine enough to draw a curve rather than a staircase. Turn the corner over and you see a tight, even back with a straight cotton warp, no slack rows and no abrupt color breaks, plus a hand-finished selvage and a knotted cotton fringe. The pile is cut a touch heavier than a workshop piece from the Persian cities, and that depth is what gives this Oriental rug its sheen and its underfoot weight.
