8'8" x 12' Serapi Oriental Rug | Cream Field, Rust Coral Border | Hand-Knotted in India, Brand New
This 8'8" x 12' Serapi is a brand new, never used hand-knotted room-size rug woven in India with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. It is the rare combination of a light, open cream field with the heavy geometric drawing collectors look for, which is why this piece reads formal from across a room and friendly up close. The pile is full and springy, the fringe is clean and the selvedges are tight, as the photographs of the back and the rolled edge show. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its exact measurements and materials.
Design and Motifs
The Serapi layout is built on straight lines and angles rather than curves, and this weaver kept the drawing bold and confident. A large 8 point stepped star medallion sits dead center, outlined in navy and filled with sage green cartouche panels and a small rosette at the very heart. From it, long rust pendants reach up and down the field, each carrying a navy lozenge filled with pale florets. Stepped spandrels close off all 4 corners, and the open ground between them is scattered with serrated leaves, spiky palmettes, small vase forms and tiny bracket motifs that give the eye something to find in every square foot. The main border runs a sequence of ivory rosette medallions alternating with angular palmette vases on a deep rust ground, framed by narrow ivory guard stripes carrying small blossoms and green leaves. If you like this angular vocabulary, the geometric medallion rugs collection is the right place to compare.
Cream, Rust Coral and Peach in Detail
The field is a warm cream, closer to light wheat than to white, and it carries a soft abrash that shifts a shade lighter and darker across the width as the wool catches light. Against it, the medallion and pendants are a clear rust coral with a brick undertone, and the corner spandrels drop to a muted peach that reads almost dusty rose in the floor photographs. Outlining throughout is a dark navy blue that is nearly black where the pile is thick, which is what keeps the drawing crisp. The secondary palette is where this rug earns its keep: sage and soft teal green in the leaves and medallion panels, saffron gold in the small blossoms and guard stripes, and a cooler ice blue in the spandrel vases. The border holds the deepest rust in the rug, so the whole composition is framed in warm red while the center stays light and airy.
Made in India: Weave and Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and a piece like this shows why: a true knotted weave, honest wool, and drawing kept faithful to the classic Serapi cartoon rather than simplified for speed. The folded corner photograph shows a regular, evenly packed back on a cotton foundation, with the pattern legible from behind, which is the mark of a disciplined weaver rather than a rushed one. The wool takes dye cleanly and has enough lanolin to stay resilient underfoot, so this is an Oriental rug you can put in a room that gets used. At 8'8" x 12' it covers a seating group with furniture fully on the rug or sits under a table for 8, and it belongs with the other 9x12 Oriental rugs if you want to see how the proportion works in other palettes.
