8'8" x 9'4" Round Oriental Rug | Dom Esfahan Dome Design | Wool and Silk, Brand New
A true round at 8'8" x 9'4", this piece is hand-knotted in wool with silk worked through the highlights, and it has never been on a floor. The whole composition is built to be read from the center outward, which is exactly what a round should do and exactly what a rectangle cannot. Beige and camel carry the ground, a 12 point star medallion anchors the middle, and the silk catches light along the outlines so the drawing lifts as you walk around it. Round pieces of this diameter are far less common than round Oriental rugs in the usual 6 and 8 foot sizes, and this one is large enough to hold a dining table or fill a rotunda entry on its own. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool and silk pile and the measurements above.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the Dom Esfahan, a dome drawing taken from the inside of a domed ceiling and flattened into a circle. At the center sits a 12 point star filled with tiny palmettes, curling vine and a small black cross rosette at the very middle. Radiating out from that star are 12 wedge shaped panels, each one drawn like a vaulted section of the dome, alternating dark navy and deep charcoal grounds packed with arabesque scroll and blossoms. Between the wedges the weaver has set narrow diamond cartouches on an ivory ground, with a beaded, twisted rope line running along every rib so the vault structure stays legible at 10 feet away. A band of pointed arches closes the field, and the wide outer border alternates octagonal rosette panels with elongated cartouches, each one a complete little medallion in its own right. The border is finished with two guard stripes and a plain dark outer band that frames the circle cleanly against the floor.
The Beige, Navy and Maroon Palette
The dominant reading is beige: a warm camel and sand tone that fills the border ground and the outer arches and keeps the rug light in a room. Against it, the wedge panels run navy and near black, which is what gives the dome its depth and makes the ivory ribs jump. Maroon is the third voice, used in the border cartouches and the rosette panels, and it leans brick rather than bright red, so it reads as a warm brown red in daylight. The surprise is the light blue: a soft slate and powder blue that appears in the center star, in the small flower heads scattered across the wedges and in the outlines of the border medallions, cooling the whole palette and keeping it from going too traditional. Ivory does the structural work, outlining every rib, arch and cartouche, and the silk highlights sit mostly in those ivory and pale blue passages so the light moves as you circle the rug. Soft rose, sage green and a touch of terracotta appear in the smaller blossoms.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This one is honestly made in China, woven in a workshop that specializes in fine classical Oriental drawing on a cotton foundation. Chinese workshops at this level knot tightly enough to carry the curved line and the tiny floral detail the dome layout demands, and they use silk the way it should be used, as accent rather than as the whole pile, so the rug keeps the body and wear resistance of wool. If you are weighing how this sits next to other origins, our guide on what actually separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug is worth reading before you decide. The finishing on this piece tells you plenty on its own: a flat woven kilim end, hand tied ivory fringe worked evenly the whole way around the circumference, and a dark outer band that keeps the circle true with no waviness at the edge. Getting a round to lie perfectly flat is harder than getting a rectangle to do it, and this one does.
