8' x 10'3" Aubusson Flat Weave Rug | Black English Garden Floral | Brand New, Never Used
This is a hand-woven Aubusson flat weave in the English garden manner, 8' x 10'3", with no pile at all: the design is built directly into the weave, so the surface sits thin, smooth and tight to the floor. Tumbling bouquets of roses, peonies, tulips, chrysanthemums and hanging wisteria spill across a near-black ground, framed by a wide rose-brown border of scrolling blooms and two narrow green guard bands. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, with crisp selvages and clean kilim ends as shown in the back photograph. The low profile makes it one of the easier pieces to place in the 8x10 Oriental rugs range, since chairs slide over it without catching and doors clear it. Every rug we sell, this one included, ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is drawn as a loose garden rather than a formal medallion layout: 4 large corner bouquets anchor the composition, a central cluster rises through the middle, and trailing wisteria panicles drop between them like cut stems laid on dark cloth. The flower vocabulary is European, full-blown cabbage roses, open peonies, ruffled chrysanthemums, single tulips and small 5 petal blossoms scattered as filler, all shaded in 3 and 4 tones per bloom so each petal turns. Broad green leaves carry the eye between groups. The border repeats the same garland on a plain ground with curling acanthus scrolls at each corner, and the design is bracketed by 2 narrow bands of small stylized flowerheads on green, then an outer black band that echoes the field and finishes the rug cleanly.
Black Ground, Rose-Brown Border and Garden Color
The ground reads as a very deep near-black that shifts toward bottle green where the light catches it, which is exactly what gives the flowers their glow. Against it the blooms run through dusty rose, old burgundy, muted terracotta, warm cinnamon brown, soft apricot and a pale ivory-cream used on the highlight petals and tulip throats. Leaves are a dense forest green with a cooler blue-green in the shading. The wide border is a dusty rose-brown, a full shade lighter and warmer than the field, so the rug carries 2 distinct color temperatures: a dark, jewel-like center and a soft, chalky frame. Small brick-red and olive flowerheads in the guard bands pick up the warm end of the palette. The overall effect is moody rather than bright, and it works best in a room with warm wood, brass or cream upholstery to lift it.
Aubusson Weaving and Where This Rug Was Made
Aubusson describes a flat tapestry weave, originally a French workshop tradition, in which colored wefts are packed over a cotton warp to draw the picture instead of tying a knot for each point of color. China has carried that tradition on for decades and is now where almost all of the serious hand-woven Aubusson work is made, and the weaving here is honest village-workshop quality: even tension across the full 8' width, straight sides, square corners and shading transitions that stay smooth through the larger flower heads. Because there is no pile to crush, a flat weave like this one shows traffic very differently from a knotted Oriental rug, staying flat and keeping its drawing sharp, which is why decorators reach for them under dining tables and in rooms where furniture moves.
