This 9'3" x 12'3" Aubusson flat weave is a garden drawn in wool: open cream ground, long scrolling green vines, and roses opening in berry red and blush pink from one end of the field to the other. There is no pile here at all. The wool is woven flat against a cotton foundation in the Aubusson tapestry manner, which is why the drawing reads as crisply as a painted panel and why the rug sits low enough to slide under a door or a dining chair without a fight. Design and Motifs

The field is an all over rose trellis rather than a medallion layout. Thick green stems loop into soft ovals, and inside each loop sits a full blown rose, alternating deep berry heads with pale blush ones, surrounded by buds and broad serrated leaves. There is no repeating stamp to the drawing: blossoms tilt at different angles and the leaves fall naturally, the way an 18th century French cartoon would have been painted before it ever reached a loom. Three distinct bands frame it. A slim copper guard line closes the field, then a wide inner border carries deep blue tulip and pomegranate forms on a lighter cream ground with small russet rosettes and 4 petal florets between them, and the outer border runs a procession of periwinkle iris on ribboning stems.
