8' x 10'6" Indian Transitional Rug | Wool | Brown and Cream

A Width: 8' x Length: 10'6" rug knotted by hand in India with a dense wool pile. From across a room the field reads almost black, and only closer does it open into a dark coffee brown ground carrying an all-over pattern of palmettes, rosettes and broad leaves. Two wide borders, one ivory and one gold, hold the dark centre and make the rug look lighter at its edges than it does in the middle.

Design

There is no medallion. The field is built on a thin vine lattice that runs the length of the rug, hanging rosettes and palmettes at regular intervals so the repeat is clear without being rigid. Large serrated leaves, nearly the size of a hand, sit in rows across the width; between them are sunflower-type rosettes with dark centres and small ribbed buds with red interiors. The main border is a pale band of meandering vine with flowering vases and scattered star flowers, set between gold bands of leaf-and-vine on both sides and separated by narrow olive guard stripes. A plain brown outer edge and an ivory fringe finish it. The transitional drawing shows in the looseness of the vine and the spacing of the motifs, which are classical in type but drawn with more air around them.

Colour

The ground is a deep walnut brown that shifts toward near-black where the pile lies away from the light, as the raking shots show. Against it the motifs are worked in ivory and sand, honey gold, olive and a dusty rose that reads salmon in the larger flowerheads. Small points of teal blue and deep red sit at the centres of the buds and the vase flowers, and they carry the eye across the field. The gold bands are the brightest thing on the rug, a clear yellow-gold that separates the dark field from the quieter cream of the main border.

Making

Hand-knotted in India with a dense wool pile on a cotton foundation visible at the fringe, in a rectangular format. The table records the rug as new and in perfect condition, and the back shown in the folded corner is even and clean through the border and field alike. It is one of the hand-knotted rugs we stock in this size band, and the pile has enough weight to sit flat without a pad.
