8' x 10' Aubusson Rug | Chinese Bamboo Silk | Rust Field with Rose Garland Medallion | Perfect Condition

This is a hand-knotted Aubusson in bamboo silk, a French drawing room design executed with the fine, high sheen pile that Chinese workshops do better than anyone. At 8 feet by 10 feet it covers a standard formal room and still leaves the border visible past a sofa and chairs, which is exactly how this kind of layout is meant to be seen. The pile is full, the ends and edges are sound, and the piece is recent, so nothing here has been restored or repaired. It carries a certificate of authenticity from Rugs.net confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug, and it sits in our 8x10 rug group alongside our traditional room-size inventory.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft diagonal lines visible across the open rust field are fold shadows from pallet storage, not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaving us is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping. Bamboo silk also throws light differently depending on the angle of the camera, so the field can read deeper rust in one photo and warm honey in another.

Design and Motifs

The Aubusson scheme is built around a shaped cartouche medallion in the center, outlined in slate blue and ivory and filled with a loose bouquet of roses, buds and leaves rather than a stylized rosette. Around it the field stays largely open, so the eye reads the bouquet first and then follows four garlands of flowers that fall from the inner corners toward the center like swags on a ceiling. A thin inner frame line runs parallel to the border and breaks at the midpoint of each side into a small crowned cartouche, two on the long sides and two on the short ends, each holding its own cluster of blooms. The wide ivory border is the most ambitious part of the drawing: deep acanthus scrolls curl back on themselves in the 4 corners, carrying pink cabbage roses, cornflowers and green foliage along their length, with a narrow rust guard stripe closing the outer edge. It is European cabinet-making logic applied to a rug, all symmetry and controlled curves, and it needs a dense knot count to hold those thin outlines without them going ragged.

A Rust and Honey Palette with Ivory and Rose

The field is the warm part of the rug, a rust that leans terracotta where the pile lies one way and softens to honey and gold where the light catches the bamboo silk from the other direction. Against that, the border ground is a creamy ivory with a faint buff cast, and the contrast between the two is what gives the rug its depth at a distance. The flowers are drawn in two pinks, a clear rose for the open blooms and a dusty antique pink for the buds and petal edges, with small ivory highlights picked out at the center of each rose. Foliage runs cool and muted: sage green, a grey green for the acanthus leaves, and a slate blue that shades the medallion outline and the cartouche frames, keeping the pinks from turning sweet. There are touches of pale gold in the leaf tips and in the thin guard lines. It is a soft, light palette overall, more pastel than saturated, which is what makes it work in rooms with cream walls, pale wood and upholstery in grey, blue or stone.

Woven in China in the Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson takes its name from the French town whose workshops supplied flat-woven and pile floor coverings to 18th century interiors, and the style has been kept alive by hand-knotting workshops in China for decades. This piece is honest about that: it is an Oriental rug made in China, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation in a bamboo silk pile, with the knot count driven high enough to carry the fine outlining the design demands. You can see the construction in the photograph of the back, where the rows are even, the knots are small and tight, and the warps show the clean straight sides of a loom that was properly tensioned. Bamboo silk takes dye with more luster than wool, which is why the pastels read as luminous rather than chalky, and why the surface changes tone as you walk around it. The pile is sheared low and uniform, the fringe is full and untrimmed, and the rug lies flat and square, as the overhead photograph shows.
