8' x 10' Heriz Serapi Oriental Rug | Ivory Field Stepped Medallion | New, Made in India
A new, never used 8' x 10' hand-knotted wool rug drawn in the classic Heriz Serapi manner: one big stepped medallion floating on an open ivory ground, brick red spandrels pushing in from the 4 corners, and a deep indigo main border carrying rosettes and hooked vines. The weave is tight and even, the wool has that dry, slightly glossy handle that takes light well, and the pile is still at full height with original hand-tied fringe at both ends. At 8 feet by 10 feet it is the most useful room size there is, large enough to carry a sofa group or a dining table and 6 chairs without crowding the walls. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with the size, material and design recorded for your own files. This is a workhorse of a floor piece that happens to be beautiful: a formal, symmetrical drawing in colors that read warm from across the room and quiet up close.
Design and Motifs
Everything here is built from straight lines and angles, which is what separates Serapi drawing from the curved court styles. The center is a layered, crenellated medallion: a black-blue core holding a small green and rust cross form, framed by a salmon and camel octagon, then stepped outward in teal and brick until the outline becomes a toothed star that fills nearly half the width of the field. North and south of it sit matching teal 8 petal rosettes with serrated leaf arms, and the ivory ground between is scattered with hooked palmettes, stiff cypress forms, small boteh-like buds and tiny 8 point stars, each motif outlined in dark brown so the shapes stay crisp. The brick red spandrels at the 4 corners are drawn with ivory vine scrolls and hooked leaves, their inner edge stepped like a staircase against the ivory. Framing it all are 3 bands: a narrow camel guard stripe with paired floral blocks, the wide indigo main border with alternating rust cartouches and red rosette clusters, and an outer camel stripe that resolves cleanly at the corners. Collectors of geometric rugs will recognize how disciplined the corner resolution is on a village-style drawing of this scale.
Color: Ivory Ground, Indigo Border, Brick and Teal Accents
The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream and old parchment than to white, and it shifts slightly toward pale camel where the wool catches the light near the medallion. Against that sits the dominant pairing: a deep indigo blue that reads nearly black in the main border and in the medallion core, and a brick red with real earth in it, used for the spandrels and for the outlining throughout. Between those two poles the palette opens up: a clear mid teal in the rosettes and leaf arms, soft salmon and terracotta in the medallion frames and border cartouches, camel and honey tones in the guard stripes, and small flickers of bottle green and pale pistachio in the rosette centers and leaf tips. The spots of pure red inside the teal blossoms are tiny but do a lot of work, keeping the cool blues from going flat. Color sits evenly across the whole rug with no harsh line of change, and the dark outlines keep the ivory ground looking clean rather than busy. If your room already has navy upholstery, wood tones or warm white walls, this combination lands naturally; browse our 8x10 Oriental rugs to compare colorways side by side.
Origin and Weaving Quality
Heriz and the Serapi drawing come from the mountain villages east of Tabriz, where weavers built their patterns from stepped outlines and angular leaves rather than flowing curves, and where tough, long-staple wool gave those rugs their reputation for lasting generations. This piece is a faithful new interpretation of that tradition, hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. The looms there have the trained weavers, the hand-spun wool supply and the vegetal-tone dye discipline to reproduce a village drawing honestly, and the result is an Oriental rug with the same visual language at a fraction of what an antique costs. Look at the fold-back photo: the knotting is regular row to row, the design reads clearly from the reverse, the selvages are tightly wrapped and the fringe is original to the weave, not sewn on. The pile is thick enough to feel substantial underfoot and dense enough that furniture legs will not sink and crush it, which is exactly what you want from a rug that will spend the next few decades in a living room.
