8' x 10' Modern Oriental Rug | Silver Gray Field, Charcoal Border | New Indian Wool
This is a quiet rug that does a lot of work. The whole composition is two elements: an open silver gray field and a wide charcoal border, with no medallion, no corner pieces and no filler. At 8' x 10' it covers a standard seating group with room for the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on the wool, and because the drawing carries no pattern to fight with, it sits under upholstery, art and a wood floor without competing for attention. The pile is a short 3/8" wool, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, dense enough underfoot to feel like a real handmade rug rather than a flat panel. It is brand new, never used, and ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine-made or tufted lookalike.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first overhead photograph was shot under warm light and reads brown. The true colors are the cool silver gray and charcoal you see in the floor photographs that follow. The faint lines and soft shadows across the field are fold and pressure marks from flat storage, not wear, fading or damage. They relax once the rug is laid out, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
The design is a single frame: an unadorned rectangular field held inside one broad solid border roughly a foot deep on all 4 sides. There is no guard stripe, no reciprocal trefoil, no outer band, which is a deliberate choice and harder to carry off than it looks, because with no pattern to hide behind the eye reads every knot and every line of the weave. What gives the field its life is abrash, the natural variation in the wool and the dye lots, which here runs as fine horizontal striation across the full width and shifts subtly from panel to panel. Close up, as in the detail photographs, you can see those striations break into flecks of darker fiber scattered through the pale ground, so the surface has texture and movement rather than flat paint-like color. The border is treated the same way, with vertical streaking in the charcoal that keeps it from going dead. It belongs squarely in the modern and contemporary rugs category, and it is a practical answer when a room already has a strong pattern somewhere else.
The Color Palette: Silver Gray and Deep Charcoal
The field is a light to mid silver gray, cool rather than beige, with the faintest greige warmth where the wool catches raking light. Within that ground the striation moves between pale oatmeal gray at the lightest passages and a soft pewter at the darker bands, with scattered specks of near-black fiber giving the whole surface a salt and pepper reading from standing height. The border is a deep charcoal that photographs almost black in low light and resolves into a dark slate gray with brown undertones when the light hits it directly, visible in the corner close-ups. The contrast between the two is strong but entirely tonal, so the rug reads as one family of gray and charcoal rugs rather than a two-color graphic. Practically, it works with white and off-white walls, with black metal and glass, with walnut and oak, and it is forgiving in a busy household because neither the gray nor the charcoal shows traffic the way an ivory field would.
Made in India: Weaving Town and Quality
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that with confidence after decades of buying there. The weaving belt around Bhadohi and Mirzapur has the looms, the spinners and the finishers to produce modern designs at a level of handwork that no power loom can imitate, and this piece shows it: knots tied by hand row by row on a cotton warp, selvedges wrapped by hand, ends finished flat and straight, and an even 3/8" clip across the full 8' x 10'. Turn to the back, as in the final photograph, and you see the grid of individual knots rather than the glued scrim of a tufted rug. The wool is the real measure of value here, a springy hand-spun yarn that takes dye unevenly on purpose and will burnish rather than flatten over years of use. Among 8x10 Persian and Oriental rugs this is one of the easiest pieces to live with, and it is inventory number 5449 in perfect, never used condition.
