8' x 10' Indian Mahal Design Rug | Black Field, Burgundy Border | Lustrous Wool | New

This is a new, never used hand-knotted room-size piece that reads far more expensive than most 8' x 10' floor coverings on the market. The field is a deep inky black, filled edge to edge with large blossoms in rose, gold and sage, and it is framed by a wide burgundy border carrying curling acanthus leaves. The wool is noticeably lustrous, with a dense, springy handle you can see in the rolled-edge photographs, and the weave is tight and even from selvedge to selvedge. It sits squarely in the most useful of all 8x10 hand-knotted rugs proportions for a living or dining room. Every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, materials, size and origin.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Mahal layout: no central medallion, just a confident all-over floral design built from oversized rosettes and lobed palmettes linked by a thick scrolling vine. Count the field and you find rows of broad blossoms, each one shaded in 4 or 5 tones so the petals turn from rose to gold to pale green, with serrated saz leaves curling between them. Two narrow ivory guard stripes carrying a small meandering flower head separate the field from the main border, where paired acanthus leaves sweep around a large central palmette on each side. The corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a well cartooned weave rather than an improvised one.

A Black Field Against Burgundy, Green and Ivory

Black is the anchor here, and it is a true saturated black rather than a very dark navy, which is what gives the flowers their glow. Against it the palette runs warm: burgundy in the main border, antique gold and soft camel in the blossom hearts, dusty rose and salmon in the petal edges, and a quiet sage green through the leafwork. Ivory appears in the guard stripes and in the highlight outlines that keep each motif legible from across the room. The lustrous wool takes light differently depending on where you stand, so the burgundy can read closer to oxblood in daylight and deeper wine under lamps, while the black field looks almost velvet.

Woven in India to Jaipur Quality Standards

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece is a good example of why. The Jaipur weaving belt produces exactly this kind of goods: fine hand-spun wool, disciplined cartoons taken from classical sources, dense knotting on a cotton foundation and a heavy, closely clipped pile. If you are weighing this against older pieces, our guide to the difference between Persian and Oriental rug production is worth reading. What you get in practice is a brand new floor covering with the drawing of a formal antique and none of the wear, ready for decades of daily traffic.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
