8' x 10' Indian Rug | Ivory Antique Design with Gold Border | Brand New Wool Pile

This rug is a brand new, hand-knotted piece drawn from an antique classical original, and it has never been on a floor. The 8' x 10' format is the most requested proportion we sell, and among 8 x 10 area rugs this one stands out for the sheer amount of drawing packed into the field: mirrored teardrop botehs, feathered leaves and a small rosette at the center, all worked in wool on a cotton foundation. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the selvages are tight, and the ivory cotton fringe is full and untouched. Weight and handle are what you want in a room-size rug, substantial enough to lie flat without slipping and to take daily traffic for decades. A certificate of authenticity is issued with the rug confirming that it is genuine hand-knotted work.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over design rather than a medallion layout, though a single small rosette sits at the exact center as an anchor. Around it the weaver has repeated 4 large teardrop botehs, each one filled with tiny lattice rows in rust, burgundy and gold and outlined in olive and pink, so they read almost like pine cones set into the ivory ground. Between them run enormous curled acanthus and feathered willow leaves, weeping palmettes whose tips arc back on themselves, and thin vines carrying star flowers, buds and 8 petal rosettes. Everything mirrors across both axes, which is the mark of a carefully followed cartoon. The wide gold main border repeats a flowering spray and rosette sequence, framed on both sides by olive-brown guard stripes carrying small red and cream rosettes, and a fine rust outline separates border from field.

A Palette of Ivory, Gold, Olive and Rust

The ground is a soft ivory that leans toward warm cream and light camel depending on the light, and because the vines are drawn in tone-on-tone golds and pale beige the field never feels busy at a distance. The main border is a deeper honey gold, saturated enough to frame the rug clearly against a light floor. Olive green does the structural work: leaf stems, the outlines around each boteh, and the narrow guard stripes that read brown-olive in the photographs. Against all that warmth, the accents carry the eye, rust and terracotta in the boteh bodies, deep burgundy at the flower centers, and small touches of teal blue and dusty rose inside the border rosettes. The overall effect is warm and neutral, which makes it easy to live with next to walnut, oak, cream upholstery or brass.

Made in India: Weave and Workshop Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is produced today. The finest Indian workshops weave classical drawings on cotton warps with hand-spun wool, and the result is a rug with the vocabulary of an antique and the strength of new wool. You can judge the weave yourself in the back photograph: the knot rows are straight, the nodes are small and even, and the pattern is as legible from the reverse as from the pile, which is exactly what a dense, fine weave looks like. The wool has a quiet luster and a firm spring underfoot rather than a loose shaggy handle. For buyers comparing categories, this is a modern Oriental rug in the traditional idiom: classical drawing, honest materials, brand new condition.
