8' x 10' Off White Chobi Oriental Rug | Vegetable Dyed Wool | All Over Floral Design

This 8' x 10' Chobi is the kind of hand-knotted Oriental rug that works in almost any room because it argues with nothing. The field is an off white ground, close to undyed wool, carried edge to edge by a soft vine lattice and framed by a deep chocolate brown border. The wool is hand spun with a 3/8" pile, the foundation is cotton, and the weave is tight and even across all 80 square feet, as the back shot with the ruler shows. In a standard 8x10 rug this is the most useful footprint in the house, and this one has never been used. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece made in India.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first flat image reads warmer and darker than the rug actually is. The showroom floor photos and the corner close up are the truer colour: a light off white field with a chocolate brown border and soft gold guard stripes. Fine vertical lines visible in the detail photo are from rolled storage, not wear, fade or damage, and they relax once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Chobi reading of a 17th century palmette and vine composition, laid out as a true all over floral design with no medallion. Large fan shaped palmettes and serrated leaf forms alternate in staggered rows across the field, linked by a thin tendril lattice that drops small 8 petal rosettes, star flowers and tiny buds into every gap. Look at the close up and you can follow a single vine from one palmette to the next without a break, which is the mark of a drawing that was planned rather than copied panel by panel. The main border carries a procession of big rounded rosettes and cypress style leaf sprays, each one separated by small ivory cartouche flowers, with the 4 corners resolved cleanly so the pattern turns rather than collides. Two narrow guard bands of running flower heads keep the border from overwhelming the open field. Because the contrast within the field is low and the border does the heavy work, the rug reads calm from standing height and detailed up close.

A Quiet Off White Field Against Chocolate Brown

The ground is an off white that leans toward cream and oatmeal rather than a bleached white, with a gentle abrash moving through it that lifts the surface under lamplight. Field motifs sit in muted camel, antique gold, olive and dove grey, with pinpoints of slate blue and brick red used sparingly inside the palmette centres, just enough to give the eye somewhere to land. The main border is a deep chocolate brown, the single strongest colour in the rug, and the rosettes inside it are drawn in wheat gold and butter cream so the frame stays readable from across the room. The outer guard is a pale sage gold, a soft transition that keeps the brown from looking like a hard stop at the edge. Buyers searching beige and ivory rugs usually want exactly this balance: a pale floor that brightens a room with warm wood or cool grey walls, plus one dark anchoring tone to tie in leather, walnut or espresso furniture.

Hand-Knotted in India and Why Chobi Weaving Earned Its Name

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging: the best Indian workshops spin their own wool, dye in small lots and hold a standard that commercial production simply cannot touch. Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dye sources that give these rugs their soft, slightly faded tonality from the loom rather than from chemical washing. Each row here is beaten down firmly over a cotton foundation, the knot rows on the reverse are straight and consistent, and the selvedges and fringe are finished by hand, as the back photograph shows next to the ruler. The 3/8" wool pile is dense enough to take real traffic in a dining room or family room while still showing the finer detail of the vine work. In excellent, never used condition at 8' x 10', it is a modern hand-knotted rug built to the old standard.
