8' x 9'10" Chobi Oriental Rug | Vegetable Dyed Sage Green All-Over Floral | Excellent Condition

This 8' x 9'10" Chobi is a hand-knotted wool piece made in India, and it is the kind of rug that does the decorating quietly. The field is a soft sage green, the wide border is ivory, and the whole palette has the chalky, sun-warmed look that only vegetable dyes give. Pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, so the rug sits flat and takes furniture without bruising. The condition is excellent, with full even pile corner to corner and clean selvages, as the close-up and back photos show. Every rug we sell, including this contemporary Oriental rug, ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted. At just under 10 feet long it reads as a true room-size piece and slots into the same spaces buyers shop when they look at 8x10 Oriental rugs.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Chobi all-over floral layout with no medallion. Thin ochre vines travel the full field in a repeating lattice, and at each junction sits either a large serrated palmette or a flat 8 petal rosette, with small curled leaves and buds filling the spaces between. The palmettes alternate in direction row by row, which keeps the field moving instead of looking stamped, and the detail photo shows how each flower head is outlined in a darker tone so the shapes stay crisp against the open ground. The main border carries a bolder version of the same vocabulary: big ivory-ground palmettes and fan-shaped blossoms linked by a continuous meander, framed on both sides by a narrow guard stripe of small 4 petal flowers. Corners are resolved properly rather than cut off mid-motif, which is a tell of a well-drawn cartoon and careful weaving.

A Soft Sage and Ivory Palette

Color is the real argument for this rug. The field is a muted sage, almost celadon, that shifts toward gray-green or warm olive depending on where the light falls, visible in how differently the field reads in the overall shots versus the close-up. Against it the motifs are worked in old gold, honey, soft terracotta and a deep brick rust, with small charcoal and navy flower centers for contrast and flecks of ivory that lift the drawing. The border is a creamy ivory that warms to buttermilk and light gold, with the same rust and olive repeated so the frame ties back to the field instead of competing with it. Vegetable dyes abrash gently across the width, meaning the green is not one flat tone but a series of close relatives, and that variation is why the rug looks settled and antique in feel rather than new. The overall effect is neutral enough to sit under almost any upholstery while still bringing warmth to a wood floor.

Indian Weaving and the Chobi Tradition

Chobi, meaning wood-colored, describes a style built on natural plant and vegetable dyes and a deliberately softened classical floral vocabulary. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that with confidence: the weaving centers there hold the knotting discipline, the handspun wool quality and the dye craft that this style needs. On this piece the back photo shows tight, regular rows of knots on a cotton warp with no pulling or unevenness, and the fringe and selvage finish is clean and original. The wool is springy and takes light well, which is what gives the sage field that faint sheen in the overall photographs. Within the broader modern and contemporary group this is a workhorse weave in the best sense, built to be walked on for decades.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
