8' x 8' Round Mahi Tabriz Rug | Fine Wool & Silk Herati Fish Design | Brand New
A true round at 8' x 8', hand-knotted in a wool and silk pile over a cotton foundation and finished with hand-tied ivory fringe all the way around the circle. Rounds in this diameter are far less common than rectangles, because the weaver has to step the Herati fish lattice down evenly on every side of the loom and keep the circle honest from the first row to the last. This one is brand new and never used, with full pile, crisp drawing and a quiet silk sheen that lifts the medallion away from the dark ground. It is made in India, where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now woven, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the construction, materials and dimensions.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is the classic Mahi pattern of the Tabriz tradition, known in the trade as the fish design or Herati. A diamond lattice runs edge to edge across the field, each compartment holding a small rosette flanked by 4 curved leaves, the lancet shapes that give the pattern its fish name. At the center sits a scalloped ivory medallion with a second, smaller rosette cluster inside it and a pair of pendant finials reaching toward the border, exactly the arrangement you can see in the close-up photographs. The main border is drawn with alternating palmettes and 8 petal rosettes linked by a vine, framed by narrow guard stripes of trailing flowers. Because the field pattern is an all over repeat, the rug reads as balanced from every direction, which is why this layout works so well as a round and why it is a sensible choice as a round dining room rug under a circular table.
Color: Black Ground With Ivory, Beige, Green and Burgundy
The field is black, and in the overhead shots the density of small burgundy, salmon and beige flowers warms that black into a deep aubergine cast, so the rug never reads as flat or cold. Tiny ivory sprigs are scattered through the lattice like points of light. The center medallion is beige shading to soft apricot, outlined first in pale celadon green and then in clear ivory, with burgundy diamonds and sky blue flower centers inside it. The main border returns to black, carrying rosettes in rose, green and ivory, while the wide guard bands on either side are a gold-touched beige and a muted sage green. Burgundy appears again as a thin outline in the inner stripes, and the fringe is natural ivory cotton. The silk content is concentrated in the highlights, which is why the medallion and the ivory accents shift in brightness as you walk around the circle.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This is an honest Made in India weave, worked in the Mahi Tabriz idiom by workshops that have built a genuine reputation for fine knotting over the past few decades. The knot count here is high enough to hold the lattice cleanly, which matters because the fish pattern falls apart visually the moment the weave gets coarse: each compartment needs enough knots to carry a rosette, 4 leaves and an outline without blurring. The pile is clipped low and even, the wool is springy and lustrous, and the circular selvedge is tightly overcast so the edge keeps its shape under furniture. If you are weighing the difference between a piece like this and a village weave, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug explains where quality actually comes from. For an 8' x 8' round in wool and silk, this one sits comfortably in the fine quality bracket.
