8' x 9'6" Mahi Tabriz Oriental Rug | Burgundy Fish Pattern | Wool & Silk | Never Used

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug in the Mahi Tabriz idiom, drawn at a level of detail that rewards close inspection. The field is a deep burgundy carried edge to edge by thousands of tiny diamond and rosette units, with a black scalloped medallion floating at the center and an ivory main border framing the whole piece. The pile blends wool with silk, and the silk sits in the highlights so that the olive scalloping, the camel palmettes and the pale floral heads shift in brightness as you walk around the rug. At 8' x 9'6" it is a true seating-area size, and this is one of the more useful proportions among 8x10 area rugs because the extra length takes a sofa and two chairs without crowding. Every piece we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, and the original inventory tag visible in the final photo matches the record.

Please Note About the Photographs:

In several of the full-view photos the silk in the pile catches the overhead lighting and reads as pale, hazy patches across the upper part of the burgundy field. That is reflected light on silk, not wear, not fading and not damage. The field is an even deep burgundy in person, and the rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is the classic Mahi, the fish pattern, also known as Herati: a continuous lattice of small diamonds, each enclosing a rosette and flanked by curved lanceolate leaves that read as fish circling the flower. Here that unit repeats in miniature across the entire field, including inside the large scalloped reserve, which is the harder way to weave it and the reason the surface looks like fine textile rather than a printed pattern. At the center sits a lobed black medallion holding a camel-ground cartouche with a 4 petal rosette, four palmette lobes and small blue and olive flowers, ringed first by an ivory lattice panel and then by an olive and ivory scalloped outline. Matching pendants extend above and below the medallion, and the 4 corners carry deep indigo spandrels with their own ivory arabesque. The main border is an ivory ground with alternating palmettes and curling split-leaf vines, bracketed by taupe guard stripes of small rosettes and a narrow slate blue ribbon, finishing at a solid burgundy selvedge and hand-tied ivory fringe.

The Color Story: Burgundy, Ivory, Olive and Rust

The field reads as a dark wine burgundy, closer to oxblood than to bright red, and it is not flat: within the lattice there are flecks of ivory, soft slate blue, tobacco brown, olive and black outlining, so the ground shimmers rather than sits still. The main border swings the other way with a clean ivory ground, and its palmettes are worked in mushroom taupe, muted sage olive and rust terracotta, with black outlines keeping the drawing crisp. The medallion adds the darkest note in the rug, a near-black ground that makes the camel and rose-beige interior panels glow, while the olive scalloped outline around the reserve is the single most distinctive color in the piece and is picked up again in the corner spandrels. The silk content lives in those lighter passages, so ivory, camel and olive all flash brighter under light while the burgundy stays deep. For decorating, this is a warm neutral-and-wine palette that sits easily with walnut and cherry furniture, cream or oatmeal upholstery, brass and aged leather.

Origin and Weaving Quality: Made in India

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's finest contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the best Indian workshops build their reputation on exactly this kind of piece: a demanding classical pattern executed at a high knot count on a cotton foundation, with wool and silk in the pile. The Mahi or fish design is the sternest test of a weaving shop, because the repeat units are tiny and any drift in the lattice shows immediately across a field this size; on this rug the diamonds stay square from selvedge to selvedge and the medallion outline is smooth rather than stepped. The pile is clipped low and evenly, which is what lets the detail register, and the handle is firm with a slight silky slip where the highlights run. Back-of-rug photos show tight, regular knotting and a clean selvedge wrap, and the reverse-side tag identifies it as a genuine hand woven Oriental rug from our own numbered inventory, 8' x 9'6" and unused.
